Behr waterproofing wood finish is great for waterproofing a deck

4

This stain, Behr Natural 400 Clear Waterproofing Wood Finish, is way better than the Thompson Waterseal stuff that was on the wood previously.  Behr warranties this stain for 2 years on horizontal surfaces and 4 on vertical.  I was really surprised by how much stain and how long the vertical portions of the decks took.  I'll be very happy if they don't need restaining for 4 years.  Most of the stain was brushed on, but if you have a garden sprayer, that is effective as well. It is way faster for application, but can still need some backbrushing.  The garden sprayer can be a lot messier though, so be careful around the house.   Since this product said it was clear and a waterproofer, I didn't expect it to stain the wood as much as it did.  My biggest issue with the stain was that rocking the 5 gallon tub back and forth vigorously was not nearly enough to mix the pigment properly.  I found this out when I was getting to the bottom of the five gallon tub and the pigment suddenly changed.  Definitely use a stirring stick or rod to mix this stuff up if you get the 5 gallon size.  I did two decks with one coat coverage with this size.  It's only been on for a few months so I can't comment on the long-term hardiness, but so far it's still looking good.  You will need mineral spirits to clean your brushes and sprayers.  The sprayer isn't going to look like new, so don't use a deluxe model, but should still spray okay.
