Beepa Fraps —

I had been looking for a low resource, easy-to-use screenshot program to take screenshots while I play games on my PC. I've used quite a few different programs but none of them worked that well for me. When I started playing World of Warcraft, I asked around to see what programs people were using to take screenshots of their characters. The only one people were telling me about was the program Fraps.

This nifty little program shows the FPS (frames per second) of an application and takes screenshots or movies (in real time) in those applications. It won't take screenshots of a web browser or your desktop but, It will take screenshots in movies and games (it's actually made specifically for games). Just press the assigned hot key for the action you'd like and it saves the file (automatically named and time stamped) to the Fraps folder or wherever you specify. I have been using it on a regular basis to take screenshots of the DVD's and PC games I have for my reviews. It's worked near flawlessly so far.

Fraps has customizable features including: Changeable frame rates when recording videos, recording sound in the videos, sound device and input for the recorded sound, 4 saveable screen capture formats (PNG, JPG, TGA, BMP), repeat screen capturing with adjustable in between timing, among others.

There is only one problem that I've found in the two or so weeks I've been using it. If you're taking a screenshot, it will sometimes skip a frame to capture the screen. Also, if you're recording a movie, especially with sound, it will drastically reduce the frames per second of whatever you're recording. This can be troublesome when trying to record a game. I'm running an Intel Celeron 2.7ghz processor, 2 gigs of ram, and a 128mb ATI Radeon 9250 graphics card and it slows my framerate (amount of frames per second) from 60 per second to under 20. it's probably my graphics card that's slowing me down so much but thankfully you don't have to buy Fraps to try it out with your system. On their website, www.Fraps.com, they have a free trial version. The trial version cuts out a few features and puts a watermark on outputted images but you get a good feel for the program by using it.

All in all, this is a pretty good program. It's $37 to purchase a single license but there's also volume licenses available. If you would like to take screenshots of your amazing equipment or record video of you racing your pimped out ride, then download Fraps and start showing off.
