My kids had the day off from school yesterday and my youngest had experienced some interest in seeing Bee movie, since this was his first interest in actually going to see a movie, I thought that it might actually hold his attention long enough for us to get to see a whole movie without interruption. So off we went to see Bee movie which was co-written by, Jerry Sienfeld).
The Plot
Berry (Jerry Sienfeld) is a bee. He has just graduated from Bee school and now it is time for him and his best friend (Mathew Broderick) to go to the honey factory and pick out the job that they would work for the rest of their lives. The whole rest of their life thing kind of bothered Berry, but there was one job that looked interesting, and that was the job as a pollinator. The pollinators got to leave the hive and pollinate flowers. But most pollinators were actually bread to be pollinators or Pollen Jocks and Berry had not been bread that way.
As a bit of a joke some of the experienced pollinators invited Berry to go with them the following day. Berry takes him up on it and he heads out with the other pollinators. Berry is inexperienced and he finds himself kind of off course in the human world, but when he flies in to an apartment, he is about to be smashed, when a pretty human named Venessa (Renee Ziellweger) saves his life as she stops him from being smashed by her boyfriend (Patrick Warburten). Berry can't help himself, he has to talk to this human and thank her for saving his life even though it is a rule among bees that they never speak to humans. He gets the guts to speak to her and though she is surprised that a Bee is talking to her, she and Berry actually become friends. Berry often leaves the hive to visit with her.
One day he goes with her to the grocery store, and he sees honey on the shelves, he is very upset that the humans would steel something that Bees had worked so hard to make.
He eventually decides to sue the human race in order to stop them from stealing honey from the bees. Berry now steps in to the human courtroom in defense of all bees, in order to save the honey from being taken by humans from bees.
My Thoughts
The movie was cute. The bee kind of looked like Jerry Seinfeld, and actually had big adorable blue eyes, that helped to make this character endearing. The other bees in the movie were cute as well, and the parents provided some comedic lines. Chris Rock also played a funny part as a mosquito and although I heard on a talk show that his part was kind of ad libbed, he actually had a couple of the best lines in the movie.
The movie was not hilarious but it had some funny moments. The story line was also very cute, but perhaps a bit to in-depth for a 3 year old to understand or get into. There was also some education about bees, and I think the movie might help people realize just how important bees are to us.
Myself and my 2 older children enjoyed the movie, but it failed to hold the attention of my 3 year old, he held out for about the first ¾ of the movie and then got bored with it and started wanting to go to the bathroom every three minutes. He has sat through a couple of movie entirely so I know he is capable of it, but I think once he got used to seeing the bees the movie didn't do much more for him after that. A court room scene is not necessarily something that a 3 year old understands. Also a lot of humor was more understandable by adults, but would fly over children's heads.
The movie was still really cute and still had an excellent message, but I would say it is better suited for slightly older children.
