Bedinabox.com Memory Foam Mattress —

My wife and I bought an H series (only the first letter is important) Stearns and Foster Queen set about 10 years ago. ($1300 in the late 90's). Though we liked it for a little while, my wife soon started complaining about the bed making her back hurt. Whenever I suggested we could replace it, she would then decide we couldn't afford to replace it. Then she wouldn't mention it for a while. But the complaint kept coming back. We recently did some remodeling (entry doors), and she finally decided that if we were going to spend so much money, we should spend some on what she REALLY wanted: a new bed. She mentioned some recent ads in the local paper, which I checked out. But the original prices for suitable mattresses seemed to start at about $2500, with the sales prices down to $1500 up. I knew she would not be willing to spend $1500 after the stock market crash, so I looked for other alternatives online. I had no intention of buying a mattress sight unseen, regardless of what anybody might tell me about it. But I knew that the Internet could give me a pretty good feel for what the bottom price for a suitable mattress might be.Google finally led me to viewpoints.com, where I found a large number of reviews about mattresses.  I initially was searching only for the brands I knew growing up. Why bother with the umpteen others? The search proved frustrating, because virtually all the mattresses I checked had thumbs-down summary ratings by at least 15% of their owners. Not encouraging! Finally I noticed that I could search in other ways. Given my wife's problems, I clicked on "back problems". Suddenly this strange memory foam brand called bedinabox appeared at the top of the ratings, with over 200 reviews (many quite LONG) and a thumbs-up rating of 98%. I was astonished that a brand I had never heard of could be getting those ratings, so further investigation seemed appropriate. As I investigated, everything I found made me more interested.: They have a much lower price than the well-known brands, they pay the shipping, and if you decide between 90 and 120 days after purchase that you dont want the mattress, they give you a full refund and pay for the shipping back to them. Try to get your local mattress dealer to match that kind of return policy! (They donate returns to charity, but they must not have too many returns, given the expense of shipping a mattress in the usual form: over $200 from Pennsylvania back to North Carolina. If they had many returns at that expense, they'd not last long.) So the worst thing that could happen to us was that we would have about $800 (for the Queen PacDown and (optional) foundation) tied up for 90 days. My wife was naturally skeptical. She suggested that maybe they had friends and relatives write all those reviews! But go read the other reviews yourself, and see if you think they could find people who would write those reviews for a reasonable amount of money. The enthusiasm about telling their stories is pretty darn convincing. And calling the company does really reinforce the idea their web page gives: they are very friendly. (For example, I was worried about buying before a sale ended. The young lady said, "Don't worry about that. you can still get the sale price if you just make sure you talk to me." ) So we went ahead and ordered, with the idea that we would keep our old mattresses close by for the first 90 days.

The first night, my wife announced at about 3am: "It's a miracle! My back doesn't hurt any more!" And now, several weeks later, her enthusiasm for her bedinabox is just as great as it was that first night. The Stearns and Foster set is now long gone. The new bed does sleep a bit warmer than our old mattresses. But when the weather got a bit warmer, we took our old down comforter off and that fixed the problem. A few days ago, I had a chance conversation with a married couple who had asked me to keep them posted on the new mattress. I told them "If she had to choose between me and the mattress, I think I would lose." When I later reported that conversation to my wife, she replied, "That's not true. But it would be close."

I agree completely with my wife's evaluation: I can't imagine how the mattress could have been better.

www.bedinabox.com Check it out! Decide for yourself.

PS If you want to see a bedinabox commercial or two, throw this to Google: You-Tube bedinabox. They have contests where they give away mattresses to past buyers who make the best You-Tube commericials about their bedinabox. 21st century advertising!

PPS I was worried about their not having more variety in hardness. But I tried these phrases in Google: bedinabox "too soft",  bedinabox "too firm", bedinabox "too hard".  I was amazed that no complaints showed up.
