Fans of period pieces feel the romantic storyline in Becoming Jane closely resembles the one found in Pride and Prejudice, one of Austen's most loved novels. Viewpoints reviewers feel this film is "a refreshing break from the full-of-sex-and-violence movies." While most are in agreement that Becoming Jane defines "chick flick," a few reviewers feel the need to warn others that calling this "boring" film a chick flick was an insult to women. so i watched this because my g/f made me.  i'm not that big into chickflicks, but then again i do like to read a good book.  i have to say the movie wasn't bad, although it would've been helpful if i read more (ie: any) of her books.  lots of quotes from her works, but were all lost to me... the story... read full review »

I really loved this movie.  It is a refreshing break from the full-of-sex-and-violence movies that are so frequently made.  It is definitely a chick flick...I think my husband was the only guy in the whole theater! Great for a night out with the girls, especially if you're a lover of literature.

Becoming Jane is the fictionalized tale of Jane Austen's affair with Tom Lefroy.  It is one of the best movies I have seen recently.  From the time Jane and Mr. Lefroy meet they butt heads like Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice.  If fact this movie has a lot of similarities to Pride and Prejudice, perhaps Ms. Austen's most famous and loved novel.  Eventually the pair come to see eye to eye and fall for each other but can their love last when his uncle does not approve of the girl.  Everyone knows that unlike Pride and Prejudice, these to love birds don't get their happy ending... read full review »

LOVED IT! Jane Austen alone could write it better!

I'm a huge Jane Austen fan and this really was nearly perfection for me. The characters were well played, and though the reality of the story is a bit questionable, the styling of the plot twists and characters in corrilation with Austen's writing was very well done. Of course, it's said that the stories she wrote and characters in them are based on her life and her family and friends so maybe it comes full circle here after all. The stretch is likely in the romance, for I fear real romance is precisely what the real Jane lacked in life and wrote about mostly out of longing.

This movie was advertised to me as a chick movie...in my eyes, that is an insult to any woman. The film was pretty boring and the story was always easy to guess at and the plot took not a single adventurous or surprising turn. The makers tried to squeeze information from Jane Austen's books into this film about her life and it seemed very artificial at many times. True, the costumes were nice, but that was about it. Loved this movie.  Husand enjoyed it too, and was suprised it wasn't just a chick flick.  A lot like the new Pride and Prejudice with Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen.  We take turns picking movies and he dreaded both of these, but was glad they were good movies and didn't mind them at all, he liked them and is buying me this one for Christmas.  The plot is great with fantastic acting.  I loved the way they wrote from what we know about Jane and then added what is supposed from her letters.  Gorgeous scenery and costumes.  Enjoy!

Becoming Jane was a wonderful movie for those who love romance stories.  James McAvoy and Anne Hathaway have amazing chemistry and you really feel that they are in love.  The way they look at each other and portray their respective roles gives you butterflies.  Although it was on the long side, I am a hopeless romantic and absolutely fell in love with the movie.

This movie is certainly at the top of my list right now. Jane Austin was an excellent author and to see a movie about her life was as good as any of her novels. All Jane Austin fans, and even if you're not, should see this movie!! Her era must have been truly romantic and this movie portrays it well.

I highly recommend!!

I watched this with a friend and my daughter.  Both of them are a fan of the author and they both loved it.  I, not being of the "chick flick" genre lover liked it as well.  It ended differently than most people would have wanted it to, but it was realistic in that sense.  A very nice, tender and good movie.
