This monitor was worth every penny. We bought it when my daughter was a newborn and I was paranoid about something happening to her at night.
We were concerned that it would set off false alarms and wake us all up, but that literally never happened once in the first 6 months. It seems to be very sensitive to even the subtle movement of a newborn breathing. It was very easy to set up right out of the box (Iand I am not mechanically inclined by any means.) You can set it to a setting in which you hear a little click every time the baby breathes just ot reassure yourself that it's working properly, and then set it to silent, at whicih point it will beep only if it doesn't detect movement.
By the same token, any time I forgot about the monitor and took her out of the crib without turning it off, it prompty beeped at me, which further reassured me that it was reliable.
You DO need a solid surface to make it work - I tried it in the pack-n-play and it was a no-go.
By about 6 months, my duaghter was moving around too muchin the crib, and she was moving off the sensor area, so we could no longer use the movement function. However, I was stilll glad to have it because the sound was MUCH clearer, much less static and interference than the other brands I tried. She is now two and a half, and this is still the monitor we use with her. After two-and-ahalf years there has been no decrease in sound quality.
I am very pleased with this monitor and would recommend it to anyone even if you weren't goin gto use the movement monitor part!
