Ok community........I am a stylist.......and have been for 8 years.....the thought of putting my hair into someone else's hands I don't know, scares me to death!! On a weekly basis I see new people who walk in and say " I Trust You Completely" granted this is a great compliment, especially when they tell you who referred them and how great their hair is, but I have one question......How many of you are actually that trusting of a complete stranger, on a matter that most view as their "best asset"?

I go in expecting that person is a professional and knows their job and what they are doing.  Plus I go on the thought of... it's just hair.  But the person I usually see was originally referred to me and I has since cntinued to go to him because I have seen the results.

I go to a place that has a great reputation and they have a terrific team approach. If you don't like your hair cut you have 10 days to go back and get it redone. I would trust any one of the stylists there to listen to me and be capable enough to do what I asked. If i was doing something new, I would bring in a picture and talk to the woman I usually go to. I would not just walk into any place and trust my hair! But i feel very safe where I go.

I had the same hairdresser for years and she was a great lady, but she gave me the SAME haircut everytime no matter what I said. I finally switched when she went on maternity leave, i felt very guilty! But now i am much happier!

I do trust my stylist completely. I stick with someone around my age who goes to classes to learn new styles/techniques. I have coarse, thick and naturally curly hair which can be a challenge. I try to pick a stylist with the same type of hair because it's really easy to get a bad haircut with those challenges. Properly educated stylists will advise against a cut or color which will not be flattering to your face shape or won't work with your hair type, even if it's the "in" style. I will pay a considerable amount more for a stylist like this, and will not hesitate to switch stylists if I become unhappy with him/her.

I pick a modern salon with a bright, clean appearance and updated furniture and neat stations. I usually don't go on the referral of others, as they do not have the same standards I do. My first cut is usually for a trim so I can feel out the stylist without getting a big change. It's like an interview or an assessment for me. I know sometimes with color, I'm sitting there for an hour and a half, but they don't need to be a sparkling conversationalist. I'll take skills over personality any day.

I think if you do your homework, you should be able to trust a stylist completely with your hair.

I go to a wonderful place that only gives me a great haircut, but also makes me feel beautiful and welcome.  Camille Leon's salon on Third Street in San Francisco is the place to go.  I travel 120 miles to have this stylist texture my hair and to give me an easy to care for hair style.  Coming from bald hair, to breaking hair, to thin hair, I now have  thick and healthy hair.  Camille you were my godsend and a wonderful stylist from the bad, ugly and now the good.

Just a note, I met this lady while serving her in a deli just up the street.  I gave her a try, which is highly unusual for me, and will always come to this wonderful salon and stylist.

I've always trusted the stylist I've had and I can say that for me it's because I really get nothing dangerous done to my hair :-D  It's a simple trim off the bottom, maybe a bit of an angle.  I don't dye it, don't perm it, don't do anything like that, so I assume the hairdresser can't really mess that up!

Granted, I like to try and stick with a hairdresser over time, but I really go so rarely that I'm like a new customer to her everytime I go!

I have been going to the same stylist for at least 10 years and I just wish I could get a different look.  She does a great job cutting, coloring, highlighting it is just that I am bored with this look.  I do wish she would go on vacation and then I could try another stylist, but they always make sure you are taken care of before they leave !!!   Also, I don't want to hurt her feelings, she is a great person and so kind.  Ugh, I wish I could be more adventurous.  I have a haircut next week and I am going to ask her for a different look, I will let you all know how that goes.

I am totally not trusting of anyone new. I had to find someone when I was in FL for awhile and it was a disaster. For the first time in my life I've stayed with the same stylist for a long, long time. Sometimes  I think of switching because she is so expensive but unless I went to someone who only does people my mom's age then I'd be paying a high price so I'll stay with MaryBeth. I just don't go as often as I would like.

I don't trust anyone new either and sit there and worry until they're done. And then I go home and fool with my hair to make sure everything is even and they didn't hack me.

Sometimes though someone you trust can totally let you down and that's a bummer.  I went to a gal for about 3 years and when i got married I went the week before for a trial style. I wanted a French twist but she couldn't do it, claiming my hair was too short so she did something else that was OK. Well the morning of my wedding she never showed up so they did my nails first and she still didn't show up so they had someone else do my hair (who incidentally was able to create a beautiful French twist). She finally showed up as the other girl was putting my veil on.  I never went back to her again and started going to the gal who came to my rescue.  I was so mad and after that had a hard time trusting anyone with my hair.

Fortunately I've been going to the same stylist for about 8 years now and I absolutely love her and competely trust her.  She always does a great job, never takes too much off, and is honest about what looks good on me and what doesn't.

I trust that the stylist knows her job and listen to what I am asking for.  I do not have a regular stylist.  Also I believe that its just hair you wont die if you have a bad haircut it grows back.  Its not like its life or death if you get a bad stylist.  Also alot of places will try to make you happy so if you dont like it they will try to fix it for you or give you a refund.

I never trust anyone new with my hair. I still get nervous when the woman I have been going to for years comes near me. She generally gets it as right as it can be (I tend to want certain things that aren't realistic for one reason or another). I know her well enough that I can just call and say I don't like something and she will have me back and do her best to fix it.

I have had really bad experiences in the past with people I didn't know well. Perms that ended up looking like a frizzy poodle instead of a body wave, highlights that were bright orange and eventually started to just fall out, asking for an inch to be trimmed and losing 6...ahhhh!

At least the person I go to now knows me well enough not to do that sort of thing and I trust her enough to relax a bit. It realty IS only hair but dang it, it's my hair. lol.

I had been going to the same hairdresser for 10 years and I trusted her because she had gotten to the point where she knew what I wanted.  I moved and had to find a new hairdresser.  I have been going to one for around 6 months and she still can't get it right.  She is close to where I live and she is a nice person so I haven't started looking for someone new.

I am probably too trusting for my own good. It has proven to be a near fatal experience at times. (Not literally) Normally when I go to have my hair done, I am completley trusting of my stylist. I go in there expecting her to know what would suit me the best. Depending on my face shape, the seasons, weather and whatnot.  Ive only been completley disappointed maybe twice in my lifetime, and hope to keep up my good streak Ive got going.

I think I've only been completely happy twice in my life when leaving the stylist's. I think part of it is that they don't simply say, "I can't make your hair look that way because it..." and explain. Instead they try and I end up looking silly. They always cut bangs way too short AND roll them under. That's like what, 80's style? They take too much off the bottom so I get a cut not a trim, and they style my hair in ways they should know I will never replicate. But ehh, I just go home, wash my hair and restyle it as best I can.

Lately, I had decent luck. I wanted layers all over with some coming toward my face and got exactly that. Color me...shocked but happy!

Someday I WILL get that Joan Jett hair do I always wanted but missed the boat on when it went out of style just as I was old enough to go for it. I loved her hair spiky and rocker chick looking and have wanted that style for decades, really! I am at the point where I'm just going to do it and let people laugh at my dated hairstyle. I'm getting too old to wait for Joan Jett's hair in the 70's to come back into style.

Patty, have you seen the Joan pic I took back in 1978 in my photo file?  It wasn't really spiky...yet, I think that came a year or two after I took that.  That would look good on you me thinks... you should do it.

I will still, at this point, always do my own hair ~ cut, color all of it.  It's not a matter of money today, it's a matter of all the money & worry about it that I've wasted in the past.  I was never happy with hair stylist hair cuts.

I'd go to stylists for so many years, and they always whacked too much off the length and never got it thin enough.   I've never been happier doing mine my own way.  I just thinned it again today...more for the compost pile....ewwww, you say?  It's great for my compost bin.

And the box of hair color still sits on my counter...and my roots are still grey :)  TunefulGal has hipped me to the fact that it's "stylish" with the stars now to keep their hair grey.  Ahhh, relief~!  I've earned every single one of these grey roots.  But I'm sure they'll be history soon when I feel like it, not what society or the stars are doing or thinking.     I was born with snow blonde hair.  I wouldn't die it that light now however.  I love to color my hairy hair blondish red.

:)

Ohh... hair.. what a loaded issue. As a black woman who chemically treats her hair I have to go to someone for a long time before I let them apply the chemicals. Once I find someone I like that is it, unless I move or they move. I go to the hairdresser every week, for a wash and set, I get regular trims, and relax my hair every 8 to 12 weeks (depending on the season). My hair dresser in NY was excellent I went to him for 10 years, he is like family. My current hair dresser is also excellent.

What is important to me is that the person doing my hair love hair, all hair. That way they treat your hair well and keep it healthy.
