I am pleased to provide a review on a central vacuum unit, as I found these nearly impossible to find when we were shopping around for one.

Let me say immediately that whichever central vac unit you choose, if you are building a home or adding the system to an older, JUST PAY FOR THE VAC PLUMBING!!  Even someone with half the sensibility to install would be able to save a ton of cash.  We paid around $750 to plumb the home for the central vac system in our new construction home, and then we saved over $1,000 by buying the central vac unit and accessories ourselves.

This Beam unit is compact, quiet, and fabulous.  It has a 4-gallon dirt capacity (bagless and filterless) container that you just empty out when filled (if you vacuum 5-6 times a week, it will still take at least a month before you have to empty it).  Like many central vac systems, the unit is installed in the garage, so any noise/sound is muffled in your home and annoying only to whatever you keep in the garage!  Beam is supposedly a company either owned by or related to Electrolux, which is a premiere vacuum cleaner company.  If you don't like to vacuum, you WILL love to vacuum if you get a central vac system, and you won't be disappointed with the ease of use and convenience of it.  The only "annoying" thing to many people is the lengthy (and sometimes heavy) 30-foot hose.  I say that compared to the cost of upright vacuums and the inconvenience of lugging around the entire unit, a somewhat heavy hose is a small "price" to pay for the convenience and low maintenance of a central vac system.  Though expensive for start-up costs, a central vac should also outlast the entire life of the home itself, so the only drawback is that you can't take it with you!  :-)

In response to colewise's comment from Sep 20, 2009 at 3:46PM:

There are very few physical stores to buy Beam; from what I understand, they are like some companies (Apple, though not as much -- and Birkenstock, for example) that just limit where their products are sold. Several online retailers have been "authorized" to sell Beam, so I chose Simply Vacuums, and then got accessories from Central Vacuum Planet (although the latter slightly screwed up the order in a couple different ways). You might just check around on the Internet. Good luck!
