Before you bring a Beagle home, I highly recommend doing research on the breed. After that, if a Beagle is still you choice, know who the breeder is, and if possible, bring the Beagle home for a week to get a good idea of his/her personality.
I love the Beagle breed and generally have one. The reason for the caution is because of the Beagle that I now have. He turned out to have a big personality problem, if he is startled, he will bite. I realized the problem within a few days, but because of the attitude of the area he came from, I kept him. I knew he would have been put down if I returned him. He doesn't hunt, but I don't use dogs to hunt, I am not a hunter. He is, in fact, afraid of rabbits! True story. Yes he was taken to a vet for this. In the end, we know our dog and treat him by being careful to let him know we are there. I have taken a bite or two, but knew this could happen when I kept him.
All other Beagles I have had have been friendly and have made great pets.
