Beachbody 10 Minute Trainer by Tony Horton —

Quick View: Lately, I'm all about exercise but there are days when I don't want to move let alone workout for 45 minutes to an hour. There are also times when I want to workout but I just don't have the extra hour to do it. Those are the times that Beachbody 10 Minute Trainer by Tony Horton comes in handy. But don't think this program is easy. It isn't AT ALL. But if you have 10 minutes, you can get an amazing workout and have no excuses for doing nothing because you were too busy.

About Beachbody 10 Minute Trainer by Tony Horton

This program comes with a DVD with five 10 minute workouts on it - lower body, full body, abs, cardio, and yoga. It also comes with a good resistance band with handles (You choose whether you want medium or heavy resistance.), a waist belt for the cardio workout, a door attachment for the cardio work, and a bunch of stuff I never even looked at like a workout calender, nutrition tips, etc.

Tony Horton just turned 50 and he is as buff and built as guys half his age. He looks amazing! He also has no mercy and is known for his very successful (but very tough) P90X system that gets people into shape whether they like it or not.

This system incorporates what Tony calls "stacking". That is, working several muscle groups at a time for maximum benefit in a short time.

All workouts are led by Tony with one of two women with him. They do the exercises while he explains form, talks about the muscles you're working, gives encouragement, and bugs the girls as they try to concentrate. Now and then Tony will actually grace us with his version of the exercises to show us higher levels or the best form.

There are two tracks for each workout. One is the trainer track where Tony voices over the workout with specific tips, instructions, and exactly why the exercises are so effective. You should always listen to to that one before moving onto the regular audio because it has a lot of tips you won't hear in the regular audio.

There is a five minute warm up and a five minute cool down which you can program whenever you want to do them. Each workout is exactly 10 minutes and each exercise is exactly one minute long. This workout shows two women doing the exercises but it is NOT just for women. Tony generally caters to men who want to get into shape really fast and this program is for anyone, male or female, who is low on time and wants to work as many muscles as possible in a short time.

The lower body workout is filled with squats of all kinds, lunges, and plies. The resistance band comes into play as well. Tony says stacking is "a beautiful thing" as he shows how we can work our glutes, thighs, calves, and core all in one exercise. Man, does it ever burn to do those exercises but remember, it's only 10 minutes!

The full body workout is really tough because thereĀ  are two types of push ups in there and I hate push ups. As well, there are some tough exercises for the arms using the resistance bands. When you get done, you KNOW you worked every part of your body.

The abs workout is soooooooooo hard! My abs are my weak spot so anything on a mat is tough for me when it comes to abs. I can get through it though because I know each move is only 60 second and it will be over in 10 minutes. There is a timer on all the workouts that counts down the seconds for a move and the overall time. That helps get you through the tough moves.

The cardio section is a little strange. If you use the waist belt connected to the door as shown, it is very effective but I don't like to suit up and just do cardio for 10 minutes after I go through all that. The waist belt is easy to use and making sure the resistance band is secured behind a closed door isn't hard but still, I usually do the cardio at least twice if I go that far. Used without the waist belt/band, it's still a good cardio workout and I often do it three times in a row and burn a ton of calories.

The yoga portion is nice. I like the stretches and it does challenge the body. Tony doesn't look like he's flexible and he isn't super flexible but he does know yoga! I was surprised that someone so buff could be so graceful.

If you feel ambitious, you can do all five workouts along with the warm up and cool down for a VERY challenging hour. I usually do one or two workouts when I am rushed. I am partial to the lower body workout because it is so darn good!

Tony is very likable but he tends to ramble a little. He will go from super trainer to acting out losing a contact lens on the floor to show you how not to do a certain exercise. He will taunt the girls working out and push them to the limit. But the bottom line is, nobody does it like Tony Horton. He really knows his stuff and he expects you to keep up and get it done. And if you do, it's a beautiful thing. lol.

This is pricey program at $79.99 for everything I mentioned. The abs workout is actually an extra workout that you get along with the other freebies they toss in. Although it is pricey for the program, all five workouts are very effective and will prime you for the deluxe version which includes more workouts and more "stuff" or the P90X program which is very intense. When time is short and you want results fast, this is the program to use.

My Viewpoint

Beachbody 10 Minute Trainer by Tony Horton is the most effective 10 minute workout program that I own. It's fast paced to get it all in and it's challenging as heck but, when time is short, I know I am getting a great workout in just 10 minutes. When I have more time, I stack the workouts and do two, three, or all of them depending on how much time I have and how much strength I feel I have. I'm not enthralled with the cardio but it gets the heart rate up and does the job. It's just not fun. Then again, super fast results don't have time for "fun".

I give this program 4 stars. Tony is both very knowledgeable and funny and at times, just plain goofy. But he knows how to make five muscles burn in one move and that's a man after my own heart. Er...body. Er, I like trainers who know how to work several muscle groups at once, saving me time without making me sacrifice results. I work this program into my routine whenever I can.

Hint: If you want this program, save on shipping by getting it at extremely-fit.com instead of the official Beachbody site. Same exact stuff and same guarantee, just less shipping - and THAT's a beautiful thing!

I really get a lot of benefit from this program. I don't love the yoga but I do it to stretch and be flexible. The cardio is a bit of a pain for just 10 minutes so I suit up and do it for 20 or more. The legs section is amazing. It works all the muscles in such a short time. Keep on working out! It's a gift to your body. And eating right goes hand in hand with it.

I have this program and it works I feel that anyone can do it. At first it may be hard but just take ur time hit rewind and redo the step if u missed it. Even Tony tells u that at first u won't get everything but with time it gets easier which means ur getting into better shape. I have been doing the program for 4 days now and already went from a 41 waist to a 39. I have to add that I Am on a strict diet and I stack the workouts cardio, lower body, upper body and abs. The yoga flex is ok I have seen better but still i still do it to stretch after an intense workout. Thank you for ur review it helped me decide to change my life for the better and now loving the everyday improvements. Thank you sooo much.

Thank you! I love the workout. I actually love most of BeachBody's workouts: Hip Hop Abs, P90X (OW), the 10 Minute Trainer, Turbo Jam, and the new Chalene workout (ow ow!). I have pics but not in gym clothes. I have a before I started this program and now and there is a marked difference in overall tone and slimness. Thank heavens for Tony Horton when I'm on the go and only have 10 minutes!

I wouldn't suggest this program for a beginner or someone who is very overweight. Not yet. I think the best way to start out with exercise is with Leslie Sansone's walk workouts. She is a great motivator and her workouts are for people of all levels. You can start with a 15 minute mile and move up as you get fitter. She incorporates upper body moves as well so you get a good workout. Tony Horton is tough and his moves are intense. I think you should ease into exercise with waking at home and then move to tougher workouts when you're ready. I have a load of suggestions for other workouts if you want them. You can see clips of Leslie's workouts at www.lesliesansone.com or at www.collagevideo.com.

would you suggest this program for someone who is very much overweight and a couch potato? I am in desperate need of some type of program and am willing to do 10 minutes or so a day, but I don't want to spend so much money on something that might literally kill me!

I am glad you liked it. I tend to go too long in my reviews but this program is so pricey that I do think it should be broken down for people so they can decide if it's something they will want.

Thank you Patty for taking the time to write such an in-depth review. It has been very helpful and appreciated!

Well, I will say that the cardio is silly. You can do it without the stretch bands but then it's just 10 minutes of running around. If you do it with the stretch bands, the set up takes longer than the workout. The other parts are good though and really work those muscles. I find I do one 10 minute set then keep going to the next even if I didn't plan to because I hate to stop once I'm on a roll. Some other good DVDs are any of the 10 minute Solution workouts. I have a Pilates, yoga, cardio, and stretching one and it kicks my butt.

Very informative. Thank you, Patty. I'm sitting on the fence to order this, and maybe someone can push me to either side (hopefully the right one), but either way, thank you for the article.

Oh yeah, I'm a regular ball of energy. *sigh* It's weird, I can workout and give it 110% then I am back to hardly being able to get off the couch and wanting to sleep. Very odd indeed.

Yes, I remember Body Electric! I have zero room in the house and have knocked things over. kicked things, stepped on the dog....It's crazy. I'm going to try to move things around to give myself some room. All but the abs and yoga workouts on this DVD are standing and require very little room so that is encouraging!

I wasn't referring to the length of your review. That would be the pot calling the kettle black for sure! :) I was referring to reading about that intense work out!!!!!! I never feel like your reviews are too long.

This was really interesting, Patty. You know what it reminded me of ... have you ever seen those "Body Electric" tapes? I used to love that show but then the gal who was in charge started doing a lot of floor exercises. I live in a small place and if you could see all the furniture in my living room, you would understand why I don't have a lot of room for floor exercises! But even the standing up stuff was a worthy investment of time and effort. This sounds like it's REALLY topnotch!
