Back in 2003 Sci-Fi Channel announced that it was going to show a mini-series of a new, revision, of an old television classic.  This mini-series was to be shown in December and was called Battlestar Galactica.  Jump forward to now; Battlestar Galactica just finished season three.

Battlestar Galactica is a story of the human survivors, of a devastating attack by the Cylons, who are in search of a planet called Earth. While looking for Earth the survivors are also fleeing for their lives.  The Cylons desire the end of humanity and are in constant pursuit of the remaining humans.

The original series was a campy space action show. It had the good guys (humans) and it had the bad guys (the Cylons).  The show was complete with special effect and laser battles.  In the Original, the Cylons were a bunch of evil robots that were created to destroy who ever they didn't like. It has been so long since I saw it that I don't remember who created the Cylons. I do know it wasn't the humans.  I watched it when I was about 8 or 9.

The new version is much darker.  This time the Cylons were created by humans.  They were robots who designed to serve the human of the twelve colonies (Twelve planets that humans live on). Fifty years before the mini-series and the new series starts, the Cylons rose up to fight against their masters.  After the war the Cylons leave the colonies to live on their own.  After fifty years go by, the Cylons reappear. They have evolved and some look like humans.  The infiltrate the colonies' defenses and then they attack.  In the end of their attack there only 50,000 humans left.  The survivors leave their homes in search of the mythological planet Earth (the 13th colony).  A fleet of ships is lead by the last remaining Battlestar (a combination of an aircraft carrier and a battleship); the Galactica.

Fearing that the humans may return for revenge, the Cylons decide to pursue the humans to eliminate the threat.

The new Battlestar Galactica is less of a space action show and more of a drama that explores the darkness of the human psyche.  The humans aren't perfect.  They are flawed.  The Cylons aren't necessarily good but they aren't totally evil.  Even though the show focuses around the humans, the Cylons and their views are also shown.  This version also does away with the lasers. Instead, the weapons are more realistic.  Bullets and nuclear explosives are used this time.

What really makes the new Battlestar work is the writing and acting.  The stories are well written and the actors portray their characters to a tee. Due to this combination, Battlestar Galactica is one of the best Sci-Fi shows on television, at this time.

Battlestar Galactica Stars :Edward James Olmos (Miami Vice), Mary McDonnell (Dances with Wolves, Donnie Darko), Jamie Bamber, James Callis, Grace Park, Tricia Helfer (Victoria's Secrets Model) , Katee Sackhoff, Aaron Duglas, Michael Hogan, Tahmoh Penikett, Kandyse McClure, Alessandro Juliani, Nicki lyne, Bodie Olmos, Paul Campbell, Leah Caims, and Donnelly Rhodes.

I find Battlestar Galactica to be an great show worth watching.  Give it a try.

Thanks for reading

Brett

I didn't watch this at the beginning because I thought OMG, Starbuck is a girl? How dare they! When I finally came to my senses, I was blown away. And Starbuck is pretty much my favourite character. :) I'm not a TV watcher, usually, but I make an exception for this one.

Smartest show on TV. I will be sad when it ends.

My wife and I haven't seen Season 3 yet; we're still waiting for it to come out via Netflix (no cable TV...rabbit ears all the way!). But we love the first two seasons. Great write up.

Wow, we've defintely got the same tastes in television! I've been watching this show since the miniseries aired, and I love it! I love that it's got a darkness to it also. The performances are spot on and the plots are tight, too! I was a little disappointed in the third season, though. I can't pinpoint one thing in particular, but I prefer the first and second seasons more. Really nice review!
