OK, so I went from owning manual sharpeners to this little battery-powered wonder, so I can't really compare it to the plug-in types. However, after using the iPoint by Wescott battery operated pencil sharpener, I can say I will never buy a plug-in in the future. I love the portability, take it with me to ball games when I am scorekeeper (because a sharp pencil is an absolute MUST, and I despise mechanicals). With the manual sharpeners, the lead would always break, however I have had this sharpener for over a year and have yet to break a lead. It might be a little slower than a plug-in model, so if you are looking for a classroom sharpener, this might not be for you. But if you need one for your home or office, this is a great little device that I highly recommend!!
