We had a Basset we named Beavis.  He was with us for seven years.  I looked up the life span of a Basset and it said it can range from 8-12 years, which was lower than most of the other breeds I looked up.  However, some have been known to live longer than 12 years.  Some common ailments for the Basset Hound breed are eye problems, weight gain, and back problems.  To prevent weight gain, have an active dog as your Basset's companion.  We had a Brittany mix as a companion for our Basset and Beavis got exercise by chasing her around the yard.

Beavis was my husband's best friend.  He loved to be petted and loved the company of us humans.  I have noticed this to be a trait of many Basset Hounds.  Bassets are great with kids, if they were raised around kids.

A Basset Hound has been called stupid in the past, but I noticed Beavis was not stupid, he just played stupid at times.  He was always getting into the trash can and when we caught him, he would look at us with this look like he was trying to say he did not know better.  We know he knew better because he only got into the trash or got food off the counters when we were not in the room.  A Basset Hound has a mind of his own and he will not always do what us humans what him to do.  Bassets have been known to just lay down and refuse to get up when taken for walks.  If you want them to come to you at times, they will just lay there and stare at you.  A Basset Hound will go out to do their business on their time, not yours.

If you are looking for an easily trained dog, you better look for another breed.  However, if you want a dog with brains, who thinks on their own and possessess a lot of personality, then a Basset Hound may be the right dog for you!!!

We are considering getting another Basset Hound in the near future.
