I had bariatric surgery 3 years ago.  I had a gastric bypass.  I lost 100 lbs of 200 lbs I had to lose.  I had it done in another city away from where I live and there was no support for me.  I have no clue what I should be eating.  They tell you not to drink sodas and eat sweets.  I am a sodaholic.  I did manage to quit for 6 months after my surgery during which time I lost the first 80 lbs of the 100 lbs I eventually lost.  I still can't eat huge meals, but find that now I'm gaining my weight back.  I do get hunger pains which the doctors said I shouldn't have.  I don't get hungry often.  Your not supposed to be able to eats sweet things without getting sick.  I don't have that problem....wish I did.  Thing is this surgery doesn't fix what is wrong in your head that makes you overeat.  If you are a food addict then you need to join overeaters annonymous.  If you simply feel hungry all the time and would benefit from a way to limit your intake then this is for you.  You still need to watch your diet and excercise.  I think I could have done better with gastric banding because if you suddenly find yourself able to eat more then they can adjust it.  Unfortunately I can't do that now.

I live by some basic rules. I don't eat anything that has more than 6 grams of sugar and if it has sugar alcohols cut it in two, for example a product has 12 grams of sugar alcohol it is equal to 6 grams of sugar and you can have it. That is one of the "rules" I live by. I don't want to come off like I am lecturing you but if you are interested in what I do please let me know and I will go on with my suggestions. Please go to obesityhelp.com and you will find so many like you and who knows you might be able to provide some support for someone else. I went through a difficult period with my "head hunger" before I figured out that I can eat most everything, only a smaller portion. If I eat too much I have pain, pain is a good deterent to overeating for me. Please let me know if I can help. CynthiaM

In response to Cyntracer's comment from Jan 24, 2009 at 6:29PM:

I would if I was even sure what kind of diet I was supposed to be following, but the intructions I had after surgery were "don't drink soda" and not much else.

So many individuals who have WLS sabotage themselves by what seems to be a "challenge" to buck the rules after surgery. What a waste! As far as not having any support because it was done in another city my suggestion is to become familiar with a website such as Obesityhelp.com. The support you can receive is incredible...try it msgnthlhrt, you are not alone. Don't completely give up yet. Good luck.
