We both had Bank of America Visa debit cards. While these were very convenient, we quickly realized that certain purchases would be held 2 or more times on our accounts. When this happened, we would be charged an overdraft fee (or several) if the multiple holds caused our accounts to overdraw. We were very careful to be sure to keep enough money in our accounts for our purchases, bills, et cetera, but that didn't help. Several times, Bank of America allowed for the same purchase to be held against us multiple times, costing us a good deal of money in overdrafts. We eventually reached a point where the overdrafts were just too overwhelming, and we closed our accounts. Each time this happened to us, it would take hours of phone calls to get the overdrafts returned, and the last time it happened, we were told that we had "asked for too many overdraft reversals," so they wouldn't be giving us anymore, regardless of merit. I would only recommend BOA if you maintain at least $1000 in every account at all times.
