I heard about the UPromise program about 3-4 years ago from a friend, and at first dismissed it as another marketing scheme. At that time we used a cash back credit card and got 1-3% back on our monthly purchases. We always pay off our monthly balance, so we collect free money for charging all our food, gas, anything we can charge that we can afford to pay off. When I checked into UPromise, it appeared a better deal since we have kids in their teens. This is a no annual fee credit card, has a pretty low (9%) interest rate (although we don't use that), but mostly, we collect dollar savings every month on our credit card bill - the dollar savings are credited in an account that we are building to be used for our sons' college expenses a few years down the road. So just by buying our usual purchases month after month, we've earned about $1000 so far for college. You have to join UPRomise, of course, to take advantage of this credit card, but this card maximizes the (excellent) benefits of being part of that program. (You can see the UPromise website for details on how the program works.)
