I just got back from a Backroads bike trip to the Puglia region of Italy - (Casual inns). What a great trip! I like to bike, but am not really an avid biker - like I'm not on the wheels daily, but it seemed like a fun way to vacation and see a part of Italy I had never been to. It was great! You could really bike as much or as little as you wanted. Me, I prefer more of the stop and smell the coffee biking. The masserias (large farms - like ponderosas) we stayed at were wonderful. The guides that accompanied our trip wre the greatest. There were 13 in our group - the most they take is 26 - but 13 was a perfect number and we all got along well. All levels of riders. Most meals were included and some entertainment. If you are looking for an active exploring vacation, I highly recommend Backroads.
