I picked up Back To Black by Amy Winehouse over the summer because I had heard the buzz about her and a trusted family member totally endorsed the CD. Sold.
Wow! Amy isn't like anything you've heard before. Her voice is strong, true, and, not what you'd expect from her. The first few times I heard "Rehab" on the radio, I thought I was listening to a middle-aged African-American woman. Never in a zillion years would I have guessed that the voice was coming from a twenty-something white Jewish girl.
Clearly, Back To Black is inspired by 50's girl groups. You need only to listen to one--any one--of the songs on this CD to come to that conclusion. Some of them are bouncy and catchy: Rehab, You Know I'm No Good, Tears Dry On Their Own, and He Can Only Hold Her For So Long. Others are slower and more melancholy: Me & Mr. Jones, Just Friends, Love Is A Losing Game, and Wake Up Alone. No matter what the tempo and mood of the song is, the bottom line is that they are all fabulous and better than anything you've heard in probably the past 10 years.
I have had this CD in my car for the past 8 months at least. I adore it and never tire of listening to Amy's powerful voice and songs. This is one CD that people looking for a new sound should definitely check out! Recommended!
