My son was born with oral apaxia, which made breastfeeding very difficult, since he couldn't control the facial muscles needed to suck. Most Moms will never have this problem, but for those of us who do, and want to keep breastfeeding, I highly recommend trying the Medela Nipple Shield. Many lactation consultants will say that you should use this for more than a few weeks, but we could have never breastfed for over a year without it.
