I purchased this machine as an upgrade from my Kenmore. The embroidery function is great as this is my first machine of this type. However, the sewing functions are not so great. It does not sew a straight stitch very well and does horrible on thick fabrics even when using the correct needle and thread. It continuously skips stitches. So now when i want to do a top stitch or sew thick fabric i revert to my Kenmore. But it's great to have for the embroidery function's!

I was new to the world of machine embroidery when I purchased my Babylock Sofia. In my opinion it was user friendly and a great machine for the price. It has a small embroidery field as it will only do up to a 4x4 design but you can do a lot of great designs even with the limited design area. The Sofia has many built-in embroidery designs, will take an embroidery card or can be connected to your computer with a USB cord so your design options are endless. Another great thing about the machine is that it is not only an embroidery machine but it is also a sewing machine with many built-in stitches. The Sofia also has a self-threading needle and a thread cutter. It's small, compact design makes it easy to transport if you should want to take it to club meets or class.

I had been using an old Kenmore machine that finally petered out. So I started researching new machines. My hope was to find a machine that was a good value and also allowed me to do some simply embroidery. The machine was the best value I could find. It's a great machine. It has all the modern amenities... self threading and touch screen, to name a few. Brother actually makes the Babylock machines. After I purchased my Sofia I did see that Brother has the same or a very similar machine for a slightly lower price. Altogether it's been easy to use and has made my sewing projects much more enjoyable. I must admit I haven't used the embroidery functions yet. I am going to attend a class as the shop where I purchased my machine to orient myself to this functionality. I highly recommend this machine if you are looking for a good value!

The Babylock Sofia is a GREAT Sewing Machine with Embroidery Functions! I love my Babylock! It's the perfect machine for anyone from a beginner to an experienced seamstress and a beginning embroiderer. Positives: - It has a super strong motor because of the embroidery capabilities and this makes it great for sewing through multiple thick layers. - It has quite a few stitch patterns and does a perfect button hole. - It has a fair number of embroidery patterns already installed and is very easy to hook up to your computer to transfer more. - All of the instruction guides are so detailed you can easily teach yourself how to thread, wind a bobbin, or figure out which foot to use. If you accidentally lose one of the instruction guides, they are available online. Negatives: - You have to use a specific brand of bobbin thread and bobbin to keep everything in perfect working order. - You can only stitch up to a 4" x 4" embroidery pattern. - It's heavy and has multiple parts that make it hard to travel with. I would definitely recommend this Sewing Machine to anyone!!
