AntiVir Personal Edition Classic is Avira's free version of antivirus protection software. For those on a budget, this antivirus is perfect for you.

AntiVir works on Windows 2000/XP/Vista 32Bit, 64Bit and for Linux/FreeBSD/Solaris.

I have tried many of the free antivirus apps, but, at first, the reason I picked AntiVir is because it has automatic updates. The free version pops up a screen during the database update asking to upgrade to the paid version, but a small price to pay for free daily updates.

I belong to a malware research group composed Antivirus/Antitrojan/Antispyware etc developers and some of the malware fighters who attempt to help clean up people's computers on the various security related Computer help forums.

In our research, we test new and poorly detected viruses and spyware, using a site called Virus Total, which is a online malware file tester. It uses multiple antivirus engines to test the files. After a test, the results are given against each antivirus product.

AntiVir has consistently been at the top of detecting new viruses, when others do not.

What is also a plus is that AntiVir has real time active protection that will warn you if a malware file is trying to install itself on your computer and will give you options to quarantine, delete or ignore the file. This is not common among free antivirus products.

A more recent addition is rootkit detection, but I have not seen any reviews and really do not have any personal knowledge on how well that works.

It is easy and simple to use. It scans as fast as paid products. You can choose to either manually scan or schedule a scan. You also have the option of choosing which drive(s), "smart" (which is faster, but not as effective), or full scan (recommended).

I had trouble coming up with cons for this application, because it does what I want it to do. But, if you have POP 3 email such as Outlook or Thunderbird (I use web based email), AntiVir Classic does not specifically scan the emails and attachments for viruses. The free version does not protect you from Adware or Spyware. For that you have to cough up some bucks for the paid version, or find a antispyware product someplace else (Warning: Most free antispyware products do not have real-time protection or automatic updates. If you can afford it, I would pay for real time protection and automatic downloads, so your antispyware will always be up to date and your computer will be protected.)

The website says that the paid version uses faster servers, but to tell you the truth, the updates are plenty fast for me.

If you are looking for antivirus product with excellent detection, monitors your computer while you are surfing the web, downloading files, or letting the kids play with your PC, I would highly recommend Avira AntiVir Classic Personal Edition.

And you can't beat the price... Free!

I have installed avira antivir personal on my windows XP SP2. While trying to update, it says Scheduler not loaded. While starting the avira service, it says service started and stopped. Can anyone help me?
