When my first son was born, I knew I wanted to try breastfeeding. I didn't know that my baby and I would have such a hard time getting started. When I realized that we were having trouble, I went out to purchase a breast pump. Not knowing anything about them, I read the boxes carefully a chose a dual electric pump. I got it home and pumped and pumped and pumped. After much time spent pumping, I was able to retrieve only an ounce or two. I was tired, sore and discouraged. Enter a lactation consultant, who not only helped my son and I to work out our breastfeeding issues, but also steered me away from that particular pump forever. Thus began my relationship with the Avent Isis.
I was shocked when this manual pump worked so easily for me. In about 20 minutes time, I was able to pump about 4 ounces. This was so much better than the experience I had with the other pump. I feared that my hand would wear out, but I never felt tired at all. Had I wanted to, I could have continued pumping with no problem. I was also pleased that the pump is so quiet, as I was easily able to watch television while I was pumping. The pump is not big or bulky, so it can be taken along on vacation or on the job as necessary.
Assembling the pump on the first try can be a little daunting because there are quite a few pieces. After some practice with the directions in front of me, however, I was easily able to do it from memory. In addition, since it is a single pump, it doesn't have the timesaving benefit of a dual pump.
All in all, this is a terrific little pump for someone who plans to pump the occasional bottle or who doesn't mind taking the time to pump one breast at a time.
