We've got such an eclectic mix here on Viewpoints, so I thought it might be fun to share stories of the first vehicle you ever owned.

My first vehicle was a (very) used 84 Renault Encore. They actually rolled a set of jumper cables out when I wanted to take it for a test drive. It started without having to be jumped, so I thought that was a good sign. I think I bought it for about $800. It was a straight drive and a hatchback, was was really handy since I was traveling back and forth to college. I think I had just about everything imaginable replaced on the car--battery, starter, idle, alternator, breaks, etc.

I had to give up on it after the clutch fell in the floorboard in the middle of an intersection. I remember a trucker was behind me blowing the horn. I finally got out and suggested that he try to drive it out of the intersection for me. He looked at me like I didn't know how to drive a stick shift but eventually realized that I did have a major problem and actually helped to push it out of the intersection!

This was in the days before cell phones were popular and I remember my dad saying that I needed to marry a mechanic at one point.

So, do you have any stories about your first set of wheels?

Very first was a 76 VW bug.  It was what I had always wanted since I had fallen in love with the Herbie series.  It turned out to be not as great as Herbie.  One of the first few times I drove it the transmission went out, then the brakes at one point.  I had it for a while bud then had to give it up ass it was just too much repair.

Mine was a 68 Mustang - white with burgandy interior and hood scoops. It was hit head on once by a crazy woman in the mountains and totaled (but fixed back up) and a tree fell on it (and fixed back up). Had to sell it when the marriage went belly up. No back seat belts for the kiddie car seats and not AC for hot boys. Look cool or be cool (and safe)? Got a Toyota Corolla. But, I did sell the Mustang for more than I paid in 1977.

The first car that I remember fondly was a 1959 VW Beetle. I only drove it a few times, then my older brother borrowed it and totaled it.

The first car I bought new was a 1980 VW pickup truck, which had the front of a VW Rabbit and the rear was a pickup bed. That too was totaled, this time as I drove it. (Another driver turned into me in an intersection, so it wasn't my fault.) I have four cars now, but still daydream about having an older VW Golf, say from 1986-1990. I really liked those cars.

My first car was a 1967 Pontiac Catalina. It was a boat and it drove like a tank with a few bent treads.

Next car was a 1968 Mercury Cougar. Much cooler than the Catalina. Loved the flip up headlights and the sequential flash turn signal lights.

Oh geez. You are giving me nightmares. The first car I HAD to drive was a Pontiac Catalina. It was pea puke green and no shine. It was ugly. Fortunately for the other kids in the family, I managed to blow the 8 cylinder engine, but that is a whole nother story. The only good thing I can think of was that it would literally hold 8 high school kids - 4 on the couch front seat and 4 in the back. It really was a BOAT and is probably still floating somewhere out in the ocean. I think they pushed most of them off a cliff and made a mountain somewhere.

Mine was white with blue interior. My best memory of that car (other than the ones I can't go into on a public board ..... ) was after the 3rd tire in as many days went flat, me and some friends did a little car trashing. My hornpipe on the roof of the car must have been a sight for the other motorists passing by, but alas this was before the iphone or pocket video cameras, so I have no permanent record of it; just a faded memory. d;-)

On the other hand, there are other fingers....

No, wait! I meant to say... on the other hand my Cougar was an oxydized and faded puke green.

I only owned one car - it was in the 80s - a midnight blue Dodge Dart circa late 60's, early 70's.

My first vehicle was a 1993 Eagle Talon ES, candy-apple red.  I bought this car when I was 18, and I looked so sexy and cool while driving it that I often got asked out while sitting at a stoplight.

My first car was a 1984 Chevy Citation in frog green.  I actually really liked the car but it was a manual and there was something wrong with the clutch so I could never get it into 1st and it was very embarrassing. I could do all the other gears and was killer in reverse but I soon became frustrated and embarassed so my dad traded with our next door neighbor for a 1971 Dodge Dart that he rebuilt. I used to love to Armorall the vinyl seats and take corners really fast and make my friends slam into the sides of the car when they slid off the seats. I'm sure they didn't find it half as amusing as I did. :)

Wow--being asked out on a date at a stoplight--I can't imagine!

Well, my husband's car at the time that I had my ugly gold Encore was an ugly gold 1980 Pontiac Grand Prix. He tried to take out a stop sign near my home and put a huge dent in the side right after he had put primer on it planning to paint it. The vinyl top was peeling and looked like cheddar cheese. Everybody started calling it the Chester Cheetah Mobile. Trust me, I NEVER was asked out on a date while stopped at a stop light!

I got my red, '71 Toyota Corona when it was four years old.  I kept it for 30 years.  I had to learn to do standard shift to drive it.  (I was very proud of that!)  The engine worked like a top until the end, but the body and interior gradually disintegrated until the inside looked something like the interior of the Munster's house.

Some years back, Oldsmobile had a commercial which featured a family driving off in an automotive frame (not really, but for purposes of showing the car's body strength).  Not long afterward I dreamed I was driving the frame of my Toyota and could see the highway underneath my feet.  That dream stayed with me until I sold the car (for a dollar).

My very first car, was a 1969 Dodge Dart GT, very fast car, but lots of troubles with it, had to replace alot of parts, one day I asked my Dad to drive it, while we were all in the car, me, Mom & Dad, the oil light came on and stayed on, that was all she wrote and I said well I believe it's time for a new car, that day we drove to the our nearest new car dealer and I drove out the same day in a brand new 1980 toyota corolla, I was really happy that I finally was able to afford a new car, but surprised that toyota took my old dodge with the oil light coming on in trade, Good Rittance to the Dodge !

My first car was a white 1985 Ford EXP. I really didn't see a lot of them around. It was supposed to be the "sports" version of the Escort. It was 2-door and a 2-seater. However, it had a hatchback and a raised flat area behind the seats. You could fit two more people back there uncomfortably and unsafely. I had a suspicion that my father financed it for me because he knew I wouldn't be able to drive my friends around... well, it worked.  :)

Is anybody old enough to remember Datsuns. My first car was a1970- 510 Datsun, It was like driving a bread box( a very small bread box.) nothing power, 4 speed, all plastic. But hey, it was a great car for a 16 yr old to tear up learning how not to drive.

My family had a Datsun for a while. Someone stole it and crashed it into a tree. I think that one had to be automatic b/c my mom couldn't drive a stick. Yeah, that thing was pretty flimsy, not as bad as a Yugo!

Mine was a Volvo station wagon. I drove it off a truck ramp. It didn't last long after that.

I can't believe I owned a Chevy Chevette! LOL LOL

Mine was called the "White Stallion" - it was a 1977 Datsun (before there was a Nissan)  King Cab pickup truck in white.  I pimped that truck out in the back to become a "shag wagon.  It had a mattress pillows in the bed of the truck, a wet bar complete with an ice chest and drapes over the windows.  Yikes!

The first car I had was a new Ford Tempo. What a lemon!!! It had a chronic problem with the fuel injector which had to be replaced several times. The thermostat broke while I was driving it on the highway and the engine block melted down. I don't think that I'll ever buy Ford again.

My first vehicle was a 1997 Toyota Tacoma 4x4.  I loved that truck and if given the chance would get another one in a heart beat.  A great daily driver, awesome on the trails and even went Christmas cutting in the snow with it!  Always kept me safe too!  Thanks Little Truck Truck!

I bought a 1974 Volvo wagon.  What a lemon.  I disliked this car so much that whenever I got out of the car and slammed the door shut, I would kick the door.  A few years later I read the book Shibumi by Trevanian, whose hero Nikolai Hel had developed the same habit.  He referred to it as "Volvo-bashing".  I could indeed relate!

In the late 60's/early 70's my mom always drove Mustangs, so that's what I drove when I learned to drive.  My own first car was a used Mustang that I got from my mom.  Always an automatic and never a convertible.  Ha!
