When did passive restraint or automatic seat belts stop being made? I'm looking to buy a used car and would like to avoid these kinds of seat belts.

Passive restraint seatbelts were the ones where the clasp was on the door frame and there was a little motor that caused the clasp to go toward the front or back of the frame, depending on whether the door was open or closed. They didn't bother me, but many people hated them.

I think they were last used in cars around 1990... perhaps as late as 1992. You'd have to be looking at pretty old cars to bump into passive restraint seatbelts. I have 1993, 1995 and 1996 cars that have airbags, and therefore do not have passive restraint seatbelts.

Agree with Bob.  you'd almost have to go out of your way to find this seat belt system.  Shop away!
