Have you heard about Obama's initiative? If you have a car (in working order) it has to meet some standards you can get $4500 toward a fuel efficient car which is what brings me here.

Does anyone have a car that gets over 30 mpg and can go 70 mph and has a decent rating. The price can't be over $15,000. We looked at the Honda Fit but my husband just isn't sure. This will be his car to commute with and he'll get rid of (finally) his 1998 Chevy S10 truck. The only think I'll be sad about is all the kids' colleges are on the back window (It has a cap.) Thanks!! Jo

Jo are you sure about the price limit?  You might want to look into the Chevy Malibu Hybrid, or the Ford Fusion...

I'm not sure if this would be the correct place to post this, but, if you have an old car it might not be accepted.  We have a 1992 Dodge Caravan that gets 20 miles /gallon.  People say great, but, if you saw it you would change your mind.  Millage per gallon doesn't mean a thing if you have hangers holding up the muffler/tailpipe, tape etc. as "decorations" etc.  therefore it isn't eligible--doesn't make sense to me--does it to any one out there?

Well, it's not supposed to be about trading in cars that are falling apart -- it's about trading in cars that get terrible gas mileage. Improving gas mileage is the point of the program. I would LOVE to use this program to get a nicer set of wheels but none of my cars qualify.

Cash for clunkers is really the wrong name for the program. It should be "gift for guzzlers" -- that's what it is.

That's right Bob AND the dealer has to tell you how much they'll get for the scrap metal so hangling mufflers shouldn't make a difference. Jo

This program is the same scam as Obamas health care plan.  Take the initiative and buy American - Chev. Ford. Dodge. Jeep. etc.  Get the business back in this country then push those companies to make efficient vehicles.  They have the same ability.  The big push is an underlying attempt to take ALL collector cars/classics/antiques from the owners.  Check out the New England areas forced crush of antiques.

I though the program was stupid at the start but now was a good way to lose a car that got 19 mpg for a little econo box that is highly sot after. I traded, then resold the little box making $300 and turned around and bought the car I really wanted. Stupid plan by stupid elected officals.

Many dealers are still having problems just getting paid back from the government.  The BIG 3 got their cash.

The consumer got a car.

The dealers are left stuck in the middle saddled with millions of unpaid vouchers.
