Australia's Own Wild Hibiscus Flowers in Syrup —

Leafing through a magazine quite some time ago, I came across a section of gift ideas.  I usually pass by these pages because either I don't know anyone who could use the suggested gifts or they're just way too far out of my budget.  On this particular day, however, one item caught my eye.  It was Wild Hibiscus Flowers in Syrup and it looked divine!  They are wild, edible hibiscus flowers in a light, sweet syrup; placed in a glass of champagne, the bubbles move up and over the flower and it opens, releasing the syrup into the glass and giving the beverage a subtle flavor.  I tore the magazine page out and put it in my notebook and promptly forgot about it [as usual!].

Months later in Whole Foods I found them in the wine section and I had to buy them!  They were $11 for eleven flowers [although their price can vary from vendor to vendor].  I had no idea that I was buying one of my new favorite cocktail hour treats!

At home, I placed them in their respective champagne glasses and voila!  They did everything they promised; I put a single flower in a chamagne flute with a little syrup, poured the bubbly over the bud and sat back to watch!  The champagne turned a lovely rose color and the flower gradually opened to its beautiful, full shape.  My husband said he loved the taste it gave the champagne - he doesn't like things that are too sweet, and I have to agree.  It didn't make it taste like Rose Champagne, either [which I don't like - too sugary!].  If you're not a fan of champagne, the jar comes with an eight page mini-booklet of cocktail ideas; one of them is sure to tickle your fancy!

They come in two sizes: the compact jar with eleven flowers [$11] or the party jar with fifty flowers [$38 - great value!].  They just add a special touch to a dinner party or an extra bit of beauty to a romantic night.  If you're feeling frisky, you can even eat the flower!  It has a surprisingly pleasant sweetness and wonderful aroma.  These flowers are a lot of fun to give as a gift [which is probably why they were in that magazine in the first place!] - perfect for that awesome neighbor who waters your plants while you're away!

I have never heard of this! How different. I can't even imagine having syrup in champagne! It looks really cool though.

This is so wild! I just loved the pictures and had never seen anything like it before. Closest I've gotten was when a friend brought me hibiscus tea from India. Haven't tried it yet. Think I'll go make some now to get an idea of the taste. What a neat review!
