If you would ask me what my favorite type of music was, I'd say classic rock, but in reality, my favorite genre is really soundtracks. I like the story that a soundtrack can sometimes tell, and it usually has a good mix of music, not all the same from one artist. I've downloaded a few soundtracks this past year on iTunes, but none have had the mix of music and told the story quite like August Rush.

I like soundtracks so much, that often when I'm watching a movie, I sit and think I bet this will be a good soundtrack. Many times I'm disappointed to find that a soundtrack isn't even made for the movie, so I'll sometimes track down the songs myself and make my own. August Rush is a movie about music and the joy that it brings people, so I knew there had to be a soundtrack. I saw the movie yesterday in the theatre, and by this morning I was already downloading it on iTunes.

The film is about people that are lost, using music to find their way back to each other, and that very much comes out in all the tracks here. You can hear the fears of the people that are lost, as they worry they'll never find the others again, and you can hear their hope in their songs as they're sure the people they are looking for are out there somewhere.

While most of the songs are from three separate, sometimes together, sources, they still offer a lot of variety, as the music styles here include a cellist in the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, an Irish folk rock band, and street musicians. When they sometimes combine together, or move in and out between styles of music, it's amazing and somehow adds even more emotion into the music. In the film, the music from Van Morrison's Moondance is featured, and being a huge fan of his, I thought I detected another song of his as well, but Moondance in two separate forms is the only one to appear on the soundtrack.

The August Rush Soundtrack presents a nice set of music, able to make you experience the same highs and lows that they do in the movie. The young boy in the movie says that he believes in music the way that some people believe in fairy tales. This soundtrack makes me believe in it just the same.

Never saw the movie, but I'm a big fan of both Van Morrison and orchestral works, so this sounds like something I'd really dig.
