After our 15 year old stereo receiver gave up the ghost, I was at a loss. I know there are alot of cheap, lousy receivers out there that would last maybe 5-7 years...this time around I wanted something that would last several years, and would sound really great. We have a challenge with our specific room because it is a loft and the ceiling slopes at a 45-degree angle.
I looked awhile then decided to join an internet group to find out more. After reviewing this site I joined and was in over my head, this requires alot of technical knowledge! For several weeks I just read whatever I could and monitored new postings, etc. I took some notes and checked some things out online that were mentioned, because I didn't want to spend more than $800 on the whole system (speakers, receiver, CD player, etc.) I'm an avid ebayer so I planned to set up some searches there once I figured out which brand was going to be for me.
Finally I submitted a posting asking the more educated users about what I had chosen, and explained the room and its challenges. I didn't get alot of replies but I did get an approval that what I chose would work together.
This was a good site to learn about stereo equipment. I was surprised at the knowledge, and the high end name brands I had never even heard of (not in your normal Wal Mart or Circuit City store).
I ended up with a superb system. My husband was floored when he hooked it up and turned it on. He says it sounds better than any home system he has ever heard. My thanks go to audiogon.
