Have a blind loved one, an avid reader

When my mother started to go blind, one of the things she worried about was missing out on was books. She's always been an avid reader - from newspapers to best sellers to more obscure stuff.  Most people assume that anyone going blind would learn to read Braille. The fact is, it's difficult for an adult to learn, and even more difficult for an adult with diabetes to learn, due to related circulation problems. As most people who develop blindness late in life are diabetics, there are actually lots of blind adults out there who never learn to read Braille. My mom is one of these people.

Audio books are great on road trips, on walks, or anywhere your thoughts might start wondering because there's nothing for it to focus on but it'd be impossible to read an actual physical book. Of course you could just listen to music on your MP3 player. But don't you have a whole list of to-read books that you can't seem to get around to reading?

If you like to read and...

drive long distances,

or

take long walks to get places,

or

often cook, iron, etc.

Then audio books will make those boring routines something to look foward to, and will enrich your brain as well.

Not to mention there are sites where...

I don't know who it was that was smart enough to come up with the audio book but, what a brilliant idea! I just can't thank you enough! I have enjoyed many stories that I never would have been able to read - do to lack of free &/or extra time, and now, to be able to listen to so many wonderful stories while I'm driving, or tending to the everyday task at hand... washing dishes doesn't seem like such a chore when I can focus on an audio book instead!

I have long been a road warrior and so have been listening to audiobooks for years.  Cracker Barrel was my introduction to this medium of "reading".  They still have a great deal on their audio books.  You pay full price for the "book", but you can bring them back and get a refund less the weekly charge.  It used to be $3/week, but it's been it's been a few years since I was last there so it could be more.

These days I download audiobooks from iTunes.  The drawback of downloads from this source (or from eMusic, Audible.com, etc.) is you pay full price for a book you most likely will just...

I think these are one of the best ideas to come along in a long time. Not only does it make my commute less of a pain, but I get to "read" all the books I don't have time to due to working and studying. I think they are a great way to get through rush hour with getting road-rage. And being able to load them on to an mp3 player amkes working out a little more enjoyable.

The monotone i can't stand. i'd rather read the book myself so i can imagine the characters voices and appearance in my own head. It's easier to concentrate on reading it than listening to it
