When my mother started to go blind, one of the things she worried about was missing out on was books. She's always been an avid reader - from newspapers to best sellers to more obscure stuff. Most people assume that anyone going blind would learn to read Braille. The fact is, it's difficult for an adult to learn, and even more difficult for an adult with diabetes to learn, due to related circulation problems. As most people who develop blindness late in life are diabetics, there are actually lots of blind adults out there who never learn to read Braille. My mom is one of these people.

read full review »I have long been a road warrior and so have been listening to audiobooks for years. Cracker Barrel was my introduction to this medium of "reading". They still have a great deal on their audio books. You pay full price for the "book", but you can bring them back and get a refund less the weekly charge. It used to be $3/week, but it's been it's been a few years since I was last there so it could be more.
These days I download audiobooks from iTunes. The drawback of downloads from this source (or from eMusic, Audible.com, etc.) is you pay full price for a book you most likely will just...
