Atonement —

Atonement is an emotional, eloquently delivered historical movie starring Kiera Knightly and James McAvoy. The story is based on a novel about a young couple (rich girl, poor (but well educated) boy) whose romance takes a turn for the worse due to a false accusation from the girls younger sister. Ultimately, the boy is wrongfully arrested and sent to prison and then war.

The rest of the movie centers around their journey to reunite and rekindle their love. It also addresses the younger sisters journey in finding truth and ultimately revealing the real story of this man and her sister.

Atonement is a heart breaking movie of romance, history, truth and true love. The costumes are exquisite, the acting perfect and the attention to detail unbelievable. I cant recommend it more highly.

Go see Atonement. You are missing out if you dont. (p.s. I am intentionally being vague since i dont want to reveal the movie. And, admittedly, it is a complex movie to describe). My best advice, skip reading full review details and just go see the movie. You wont be disappointed.

I just got this from Quickflix (Aussie Netflix) and am saving it for a night my husband goes to bed early. It looks like a good one! Thanks for the review!

As is the case in most instances, the book is much better than the movie. I recommend it.

Thanks Jolie. My mom and I are trying to figure out what movie to go see today and you're review helped. I think we'll go see it.

Happy New Year. We saw it in an Arts Playhouse, so the crowd was under 150 people. I didn't speak to everyone, but listening to the comments of people in general was that it was draggy. We went with another couple, and they both thought the same as we did.

Did you talk to everyone coming out of the theatre? ;)
I do have to say, though, that I tend to love movies that the "professionals" hate, and hate the ones they love. I probably won't see this movie in the theatre.

Really? You felt cheated? I didnt at all. I felt pretty good about the ending and that it was shockingly realistic. In fact, I just felt soooo sad that I was thinking about it for days. You should write a review of your take so that people see another perspective. :) Thanks for the feedback.

My wife and I saw the movie last weekend. The majority of the audience agreed that the movie was a film critic's dream and a moviegoer's disappointment. The cinematography was breathtaking and the performances of the three main stars were excellent, however the movie dragged for much of its length. The audience ,as well as we, also felt cheated by the ending. All and all, a good romantic story, but not an Academy Award winner.

This sounds like one that I need to watch alone. My hubby groans at anything relating to romance...haha. Enjoyed your review!

Nice review, Jolie!

Is this movie based on a book called Atonement by Ian McEwan (I think that's the authors name). It's supposed to be a "must-read" for book lovers!
Great review. I find it hard reviewing movies because I don't want to give away any good stuff either!

I found out about this movies during the previews for "I Am Legend." That was a great movie. Very though provoking. I don't think I could do a review on it without giving things away. Maybe that's why the previews are so elusive. Very good though.

You definitely should go! It was a really great movie. I am shocked I havent heard more about it. I just happened to get the tickets because it was at the time we were free. What a great surprise!

DanaNicole76 wrote on Dec 17, 2007 at 9:04AM

I usually am not one for movies that are set in a time so far back I can hardly relate to it. BUT in this case I just might make an exception! It sounds like the perfect recipe to keep me interested and in tears (which isn't always a bad thing :)
Thanks for the heads up!
