Atonement —

Atonement is a 2007 drama/romance directed by Joe Wright based on a novel written by Ian McEwan.  I was looking forward to this review, having heard mainly good things about it.  But it was the setting and time that really had me interested.  This movie takes place in 1935, during the second World War in England.  For me, that was enough enticement to see this movie!

Plot

Atonement opens up with the filming of a beautiful estate set in England.  The house is massive and you can tell the family is well to do.  The time is 1935 and World War II is in progress.  The Tallis family lives here.  As the movie starts, you meet young Briony (Saoirse Ronan), who is the youngest of the children at 13.  She is sitting at her desk doing what she loves most--writing.  She is in the process of writing a new play.

Briony's sister, Cecilia (Keira Knightley), falls in love with the neighbor's son, Robbie (James McAvoy).  The family is not exactly thrilled with the union and they meet secretly wherever and whenever they can.  The story accelerates as Briony accuses Robbie of a crime that he did not commit.  He serves time in jail because of her accusal and this leads to hostility toward the two sisters.

The others in the house are Mrs. Tallis, and some relatives who are visiting, including a set of twin boys.

I'm not going to go into any more details about the plot because it will simply ruin the movie for you.  My husband thought he had it all figured out and was bored with the movie so didn't watch the rest of it.  Don't give up on it, if you are a bit confused or bored with it.  There is a bit of a slow place but after you get through the middle slump, you will be glad you kept watching.

My Thoughts on Atonement

The setting of the estate and surrondings where this film took place was simply gorgous.  It was a classic old English estate in the country.  I was very impressed by the directing of Joe Wright.  He did a wonderful job of keeping this movie intersting and included several classic shots (war scenes).

The story can be a bit confusing because of all the details in this movie.  It is one that you definitely have to pay close attention to.  In fact, I think it may be a movie that if watched a second time, you would pick up on different things.  It's complex.

As far as the acting goes, I didn't really find any performances that were out super outstanding.  The twin boys were very cute and had some "classic" facial expressions.

I would recommend this movie to anyone who loves romance, drama, World War II settings or just a good complex movie.  It's a good movie about love, war, life, death and romance.

Well George, from what I'm experiencing with this one is that most men are bored but the ladies love it. So, you've been warned ;)

Haha, that was my husband's sentiments exactly. He ended up dozing off and missed the best part!

Sounds like EXACTLY the kind of movie I'd rather read reviews of than actually watch for myself ;-)
