Atkins Review Summary

The Atkins diet has been controversial over the years. The debate goes on while consumers and experts take their stance on the health benefits or risks of following the Atkins diet. Is eating a low-carb, high-protein meal plan healthy and effective for weight loss? The answer is not cut and dry. Some argue that carbs are what is killing us and making us gain weight, while others argue that a high-fat diet, like Atkins, is unhealthy long-term. Atkins diet followers complain that it is too strict, they have heart problems, they crave carbs and they fall off the diet and regain the weight easily. When followed to the T, however, most reviewers have found that the Atkins diet helps them shed pounds quickly.

I have tried most diet programs with limited success and usually weight gain after the program gets stale....I always wondered why when eating the "right things" according to the food pyramid- whole grains etc., the weight loss was so sluggish.  I also wondered why the medical profession was… read full review »

Where to begin? Let me just say that my experience is probably unlike anyone else's on the Atkins Diet. But this is my story of what can happen when you follow this diet. — My Story — Several years ago, before my thyroid problem was discovered and treated, I gained 20 pounds seemingly… read full review »

I must admit, I am inspired by PattyTherre's and Jo's reviews of The Atkins Diet. Enough so that I wanted to write my review of this diet as well, just to round out the group. — I turned to The Atkins Diet several years ago in my late twenties, when I was looking to drop about ten pounds. To be completely honest, I am always looking to drop about ten pounds. Even when I was a child, and a small one at that, I felt fat. I turned to the Atkins Diet after low-fat diets seemed to become too restrictive, and also because my boyfriend's father had lost more than fifty pounds with the diet,… read full review »

Why did I decide to try this diet? — — I had gained some weight and this diet appealed to me because it seemed I could eat a lot! — — How healthy is the diet and does it pose any health risks? — — Once when I was one it, I happened to have a doctor’s appointment. I told my doctor that I was on Atkins and he had no concerns about it. I was a bit surprised considering that one of the mainstays is unlimited fat- at least in the first phase. What surprised me so much is that my doctor’s specialty is cardiology and I have high cholesterol… read full review »

A few years ago I read the book and went on this diet.  I stuck to it for two weeks and lost 15 pounds.  I was amazed.  The weight came flying off.  For the first few days it was hard because I love carbs and they were such a central part of my diet.  For the rest of the two weeks however, it became easier and I also added back a few things like strawberrys. I tried a healthy version of this diet with included things like Turkey Bacon and Egg Whites for breakfast and salads for lunch.  Cutting out the high calorie orange… read full review »

I am on Atkins again after a successful weight loss. This diet really works well for me. It makes my skin clear up, my dandruff disappear and my weight drops. I moderate what I eat, lots of green leafy veggies, a mix of proteins including chicken, fish and beef. I have strawberries, cheese and nuts. I have found that measuring helps a great deal. Even though there are not any restrictions on amounts eaten, I find that measuring helps me know exactly what I am eating. — This diet works so well for me that I have actully been told to go on it by my doctors. Each person is different, but… read full review »

This diet is not for everyone, but it definitely was for me! I dropped 30 pounds in about 3 months and have mostly maintained it (what little I've gained back is due to my inconsistency with it). The bad thing about this diet is that you have to be steadfast or you will gain the weight back. You also have to be willing to change your mindset about how you think about food - fat is not "bad" anymore, and that takes an open mind and some willingness to observe the science behind it rather than the emotional side of it which can be difficult. You can't do this diet AND do low-fat. They just… read full review »

My husband was diagnosed with Type II diabetes about 15 years ago. He struggled with several different diabetic diets and various medications and could not get his blood sugar leveled out.  I have always been a "BIG" girl and I've tried numerous products and diets in my lifetime. Against the advice of his physician, we set out on a 12 month adventure. — It was so easy to do---at first. Just give up bread, buns, corn, peas, cake, cookies, bagels, muffins, cereal, fruit, pancakes, breading on fish, breading on tenderloins, breading on fried chicken.......the list goes on and… read full review »

Atkins.  It's very extreme in the diet that it poses.  All meat, eggs, cheese all the time.  Hardly any or no carbs.  Sounds great for those couch potatoes, right?  But is it a good system long term? — Any diet, be it Atkins or South Beach or any number of the others, should consider the moderation rule.  You shouldn't cut anything out of your diet to extremes.  Even Vegans (vegetarians who do not believe in eating dairy or egg products) still have to supplement their calcium and protein intake since their diets are so restrictive. — Health risks… read full review »

I am not sure what it was about this diet but it was the only thing I could stick to.  I contribute it to the fact that I am an all or nothing kind of person and and not the type that can have just a little piece of cake or something.  The fact that it was completely off limits worked for me and after not having it for a bit I didnt want it anymore.  However, on diets like south beach, weight watchers, etc where you can have treats now and again I failed everytime.  Just having one bite is the kiss of death because once ya start its hard to set limits.  — What… read full review »

I would like to say that I have been on every diet imaginable since I was a teenager.  I tried every new one that came out, every fad diet no matter how crazy, etc.  Then one day I bought the Atkins book.  I read it from cover to cover and decided to give it a try.  I have never been real, real overweight.  I usually just want to lose 20-30 lbs.  And I would and then I would gain it all back.  One thing the book said that was going to be hard for me was to give up caffeine.  I generally drank 3 pots of coffee a day.  One pot in the morning,… read full review »

First of all, I am a paramedic and very concerned about health issues.  I am also overweight, so this is a real health problem for me, if not now, it may be later.  Therefore, I am seeking to lose weight, but in a healthy manner.  I had considered the Atkins diet, as my body/metabalism type needs high protein and I gain from carbs and fat. I thought this diet would work well for me. — A close friend had used the Atkins diet to lose quite a bit of weight and it really worked for him.  However, I noticed that he did not look healthy anymore.  He looked drawn, old,… read full review »

I have to say I love carbs so this diet was alittle hard on me. Reviewing stricly on results, the diet works, and it works fast. I don't think anyone can say they didn't lose weight on this diet quickly. I like to see results in anything that I am working hard at and you get them on this diet. In three weeks I lost over 12lbs, which to me was amazing because I don't have hardly any time to work out or add anything to a diet plan that I am on, so I new right away it ways the diet plan. Now it is hard to stick to this diet, but if you're like me it's hard to really devote yourself to any diet… read full review »

I to tried the adkins diet,a friend and i went on this diet together for 3 months, i lost 5 pounds rather quickly then nothing, couldnt lose a pound and i was always hungary, when i got off the diet i thought about it, the calories in all that cheese and bacon ,sausage ect. had to be more calories than i was eating before, we ate sugar free jello untill it was comeing out our ears and still no weight loss, depending on your blood values,if you tend to run with a high sugar level this diet could do you some good, but if your like me and have a low sugar level anyway  this diet will slow… read full review »

Adkins was the best diet I've been on.  Quick weight loss.  Quick results, and that's what we all wish for.  I've never been a snacker, and never got into chips, ice cream or cookies.  Always liked my meat.  Carnivore.  So this was perfect for me.  The only problem was that after two weeks or so, I really craved mashed potatoes, with the extra butter.  It became almost an obsession.  When I finally allowed myself a small bowl, it was like heaven on earth.  The richest, most flavorful mashed potatoes I'd ever eaten.  I even groaned with… read full review »
