My husband was diagnosed with Type II diabetes about 15 years ago. He struggled with several different diabetic diets and various medications and could not get his blood sugar leveled out. I have always been a "BIG" girl and I've tried numerous products and diets in my lifetime. Against the advice of his physician, we set out on a 12 month adventure.
It was so easy to do---at first. Just give up bread, buns, corn, peas, cake, cookies, bagels, muffins, cereal, fruit, pancakes, breading on fish, breading on tenderloins, breading on fried chicken.......the list goes on and on..... We both missed pizza, lasagna, beans in chili, chicken fried steak, blt's, a great big burger ON A BUN!!!! But we struggled on. He took sliced meat without bread to work for lunches--no bread, no chips, no quick snacks--meat, nuts, dairy, raw veggies......I ate alot of vegetable soup without peas, beans, potatoes. We ate bacon and sausage and beef and lots of cabbage, and lettuces.
Long story shorter---husband lost 44# and I did not lose anything......Next physical, lab tests showed that he had an extremely high protein level in his urine--a sign that his kidneys were not functioning properly: blood sugar was much better. Admitted to doctor that we had been on Atkins and, while he was compassionate, he told us that he did not believe it was appropriate for us. It took about 2 years for hubby's kidneys to regain minimal function. Diabetics have problems with their kidneys and Atkins diet is dangerous for them because of the high protein. I myself had severe constipation.
Point being: Listen to your doctor. He usually knows best..........
