Takes a beating, great for travel
My Asus eee has been with me for more than three years of grad school, and it's still going strong. I've traveled with it, I swing it around in a thin purse every day when I take it to the office, on the train, or around town, and it's holding up great. It only weighs a couple of pounds, so it's a great option for me, especially since I do most of my work over a network connection these days. I did have to replace the battery once - not because its life was diminished, but because it just stopped working. But both the old and new battery get up to eight hours on a full charge, which is phenomenal. You can't do heavy processing on this machine (no memory-intensive code or twelve Hulu screens at once!) but it really can do multiple things - I often run multiple browser windows, some music, and a statistical program simultaneously, and it can take it pretty well. The screen illumination is adjustable to help your save on battery life, and the keyboard is really pretty good, once you get used to the slightly smaller size.
