I went to visit my plastic surgeon cousin over the weekend. He lives in Long Island and he invited us to spend the 4th by the beautiful pool they just finished building. After we finished drying up he called me over to the garage area and said he wanted to show me something. As the garage door was rolling up he was telling me that his 13 year old son was recently encouraging him to get a "green" car. And so he did. When the garage door was up a beautiful brand new British racing green Aston Martin Vantage convertible was arrogantly parked in there.

At this point I would like to declare myself not a car enthusiast. I only drive about 4000 miles a year and my car actually is a boring "green" Prius.

Forget what I just said. The minute I saw the Aston Martin I couldn't stop ooohing and ahhhing and wowing and begging for a spin. Apparently an Aston Martin can turn a semi-intellectually-oriented, semi-environmentally-friendly man into a gas guzzling auto freak. I quickly changed my bathing suit so I won't harm the fancy leather seats and sat behind the stirring wheel.

The Aston Martin, like the Prius, has a start button. It also has a seat belt but there the similarities end. When you press the Prius' start button, a few seconds later the engine goes silent as the battery takes over. In the Aston Martin, a deep growl rattles the car and throws your testosterone levels into a frenzy. The car has a manual gear that you shift up and down with two little handles to the right and left of the stirring wheel. it is a bit confusing at the beginning but the car helps you and shifts the gears automatically if you fail to do so on time.

As we pulled out of the driveway an uncontrollable smile spread across my face. As I started driving the smile became so big it almost hurt and it only dropped for a few seconds when we were stuck in single lane roads behind other cars. It felt like the car itself was actually frustrated when it couldn't pass what was in front of it. When you step on it and pass the other cars you can actually feel some G force throwing you back as the car shoots itself forward. I tried to look at the jealous faces of the other drivers but they were smudged as I was passing them too fast.

Yes, the car has an engine and CC and if knew anything about all this I would have bored you and myself with the details. But the truth is that one buys an Aston Martin for the emotional experience rather than the mechanical details. I know that it is too late for me to start medical school and become a plastic surgeon. But as long as I keep driving the Prius I will be able to afford the gas to drive to my cousin's house on Long Island.

Sounds like a fabulous driving experience. My husband is a huge car freak. I myself like pretty cars - or cars with style. Sounds like the AM fits all car likes.
