As Seen on TV Smooth Away —

I found Smooth Away in my local Drug Store on the end aisle, you know where they put the products to catch your attention.  It caught my attention because the statement "Removes hair instantly and Pain Free".  Sounds good, I'm all about ways for quick hair removal - and pain free is definitely a good thing!  Well, if I could give this a "0" I would, but since that choice is not available - I chose "1" for a number of reasons.

First, it does NOT work instantly as stated on the box.  When you read the directions it states move in a circular direction 3 times clockwise and then 3 times counter-clockwise.  Okay, sounds reasonable.  Yeah, right...Nothing happens!  Okay, lets try that again.  Hmmmm....still nothing.  Now mind you, it says not to use on hair longer than a 1/4 of an inch.  Gads, who wants to have their hair longer than that before they do anything?  Not me - so I was well within in the length, but nothing seemed to be happening.  It didn't remove the hair, and if it did remove any, it was only one or two of them so there was no change. Not the look I wanted to achieve.

However, It also didn't make the area red, which I thought was to its credit.  Wrong - again!  Within 30 seconds to a minute the area was PAINFUL! Not red, but painful.  I mean really painful, I could hardly move my arms for the pain.  Gee, and I thought I was getting this to avoid the pain of waxing and "ripping" the hair out.

Ripping the hair out would have been preferable.  At least then it would have been instant pain, and quick recovery instead of this long lasting pain.  We are talking 4 hours later and I still have pain.  And what did I get for my pain - well, I will now have to shave, that is when I can even get a razor near the area.

I have now seen this on TV, so I guess it's one of those TV products.  It's advertised for $14.99.  Then the sponsor says: order now and get a second one for free only pay shipping.  Yeah, well I paid $7.99 in the store and it wasn't worth that.  Don't waste your money on this product.  It doesn't work.  Unless you are really into keeping the hair and having pain to go with it - you would be better off using the old standby razor.

Thumbs down.

***Update 20 hours later - area STILL hurts, not as much but very tender.

***Final Update (two days later) - I noticed RED areas in the two small places I tried on my knee before taking the plunge to do my arms and finding out the woeful truth of the not working, yet painful attempt of hair removal.  I was finally able to shave my tender arms.  The whole reason I thought I would try this product, is that I generally use a cold sugar wax for hair removal on my legs, and while it works great there, I was fearful of the pain and mess if I attempted waxing my arm area.  Well, I can say that I will never do that again.

Still Thumbs down on this product and that's my final word, LOL.

Yep, the product it's still sitting there reminding me of the money I wasted, LOL. Hey, at least it wasn't too much money. :) And if I can save some others some bucks, then it was a good lesson learned. You always see these things and you think - wow, all those people think it's great so it must be, then when you get it and it's a dud you think what did I do wrong. However, I now see several other people with the same results and then you know the advertising did its job - it "got ya". Thanks for reading. :)

Yes, I have the same problem, don't like the every day or every other day activity, which is why I keep looking for easy or something that last longer. Waxing doesn't last as long as they claim but it is longer than shaving. I just can't force myself to do my arms, LOL. eeeeekkk. Yes, pain is gone. But memory still lingers enough to know not to try again even though it's still sitting there reminding me of the money I wasted, LOL. Oh my gosh...I feel your pain! I bought a similar product years ago to remove some unwanted facial hair (of course, ALL hair on my face is unwanted..LOL). Anyway, I followed the directions just as you did and NOTHING happened to the hair. No hair removal, but the pain...pain...pain. Redness and sore. It took 3 or 4 days before it was back to normal. I'll never use anything like it again. :)

Thanks for reviewing this product because I was wondering how effective it would be. I have to shave every other day because I have dark hair and it grows fast. I am also always looking for the easy way out but so far I haven't found anything that works any better than the old-fashioned way: shaving gel and razors ;+) I hope you are pain free now. ~Gigi

I saw the commercial on this product before reading your review. I was just thinking to myself does this really work. Thank you, thank you for giving everyone the heads up on this painful product. I'm always a sucker for beauty products. The last one I bought was the Pedegg. Thanks again!

Hehe, I agree with you completely! I ordered this product with such HIGH HOPES. I was so excited. Then I used it yesterday and today (a second chance) and it was so straining to me. Shaving is quick and efficient. Smooth Away just.. did nothing, I finally got some off, but then I noticed a hair or two still lingering. Then I had to buff my leg in a concentrated area JUST for a single hair. Aggghhhh.

I used the moisturizer they gave me because it's just that painful now.. it's really annoying. Aw, I just wish I would have found your review before I bought the thing! XD

Thanks for reading. Yeah, waaaaay to easy should have rung some bells for me, but tis the season to be expecting lots of promises to be fulfilled, LOL. ;-) It was over 24 hours before I could move my arms without pain.
