I used to be a big fan of the Swiffer mop and its disposable cleaning cloths.  It was certainly an easier task to clean the kitchen floor with a squirt of cleaner and the Swiffer than it was to haul out a clumsy mop and bucket.  However, after going through boxes of the disposable cloths, I wondered if there was a more economical and eco-friendly option.

As Seen On TV - The Original StarMop

One day while browsing the internet, I came across the Star Mop cleaning system.  StarMop is similar in design to the Swiffer floor duster, but it features a reusable, microfiber pad that attaches to the handle with Velcro-like grips.  Unlike disposable pads which are thrown away after one use and can clean only one room, the StarMop pad can be washed and reused up to 300 times.  The pad is made from the company's Starfiber microfiber pad and can be used dry for dusting or wet for cleaning.

My Experience with StarMop

I use the Star Mop every Saturday and I have not missed using my Swiffer at all.  The Starfiber pad really does a good job of picking up dust bunnies, cereal crumbs, rice grains, and other particles.  The handle is sturdy, which is important because I tend to hold on with a tight grip.

I use StarMop dry to sweep the floor, then shake the dust and crumbs into the trash can.  Next, I rinse out the pad and use it wet with several squirts of Method cleaner to wash the floors.  My tile floor dries quickly with no streaks and no residue--and best of all--with no waste or strong chemicals. When I'm finished mopping. I toss the Starfiber pad into the wash with a load of Saturday laundry.  Nothing could be easier.

The StarMop isn't perfect, however.  It doesn't do a great job of getting into corners - it tends to push the particles into crevices.  Occasionally, the pad will slip off of the grips and slide off, but that's happened to me with Swiffer, too.

Overall, I highly recommend StarMop.  I purchased mine for $16.95 and I bought an additional Starfiber pad for $6.95 at the same time.   If I get 300 uses out of each $6.95 pad, it's only costing me two pennies per use.  So far, I haven't had to use the second pad because the first one keeps going and going.  But when that day does come, it's good to know I'll have another StarMop starfiber pad ready to go.
