Arm & Hammer Baking Soda has been around forever it seems, my Mom used it to keep the refrigerator smelling fresh. As I became older I learned many other uses for this age old product. Some you may have heard of others are going to surprise you, but all of these uses I found do in fact work.

Household uses

Of course we all know that a box of baking soda in the refrigerator will absorb food odors and help keep the inside smelling fresh. You may have used it in your washing machine to help deodorize clothes instead of using all bleach. Some of you cooks may also know that about a 1/4 teaspoon in a pot of beans will help reduce or even eliminate the gas you get when you eat beans.

Others may know that baking soda is a good scouring powder to clean you counters, sink and other surfaces as it is abrasive enough to get the stains and grease up but won't scratch the surfaces. It is also a good fire extinguisher as well and works better than salt on a grease fire or even a small electrical fire. You can also clean any food surface prior to cutting meats of vegetables as it will not leave any chemicals on the surface you clean with it.

Baking soda can also help diaper buckets smell better. You can brush your teeth with baking soda and you can drink it mixed in water to calm a sour stomach. Many people that bake know the uses of baking soda as well. Did you know that by mixing it with cream of tartar that you can turn it into baking powder as well? Baking Soda can be sprinkled on carpets to remove pet odors too! Once inside your vacuum bag it helps clean the air that goes through your vacuum as you clean your carpets.

Redneck uses for Baking Soda

Okay now for the uses that the do it yourselfer can find for Baking Soda around the house and garage. Baking soda is a very good cleaner to use on automotive battery cables and posts. It will not only clean them but will also neutralize the acid on them. Spill a little oil while putting it in the engine? Then sprinkle a little baking soda on it and rub with a rag to absorb and clean the oil up. Even if you don't smoke you can freshen the inside of your vehicle by putting some baking soda in the ashtray, or open a box and put it under the seat.

I keep an open box in my Tornado Shelter to keep it from smelling musty during the winter when it is all closed in and I have the air shaft blocked to keep the snow out of it. I air it out in the warm weather but closed up all winter it starts to smell. The Baking Soda keeps it smelling better.

Now for a use you may not have heard of......Redneck Pool Care!!! That's right I use baking soda to help maintain my swimming pool. Sodium Bicarbonate is an ingredient in pool chemicals you buy to maintain the Ph in your pool water. That is what keeps your water from getting cloudy. For controlling Ph you first must test your water and determine the Ph level. Then add Baking soda to raise the Ph as needed.

There are tables that show what amounts to use on Arm & Hammers Site, or if you buy the large bags like I do it is right on the package label. Bet you save money using Baking Soda as opposed too the high priced pool chemicals on the market! You can also maintain the alkalinity of your pool water with Arm & Hammer.

I have also sprinkled Baking Soda in my fireplace at the end of the season to help freshen the air a bit and used it mixed into a paste to clean the fireplace glass doors when they get all covered with creosote and smoke.

Bottom Line

You don't have to be a Redneck to use Arm & Hammer Baking Soda but it has many more uses than most people realize. From the kitchen to the bathroom and from your garage to the swimming pool, baking soda can be used for many things around the house. It is inexpensive and very versatile as a cleaner, laundry booster, cooking aid and even to keep your swimming pool clean and sparkling.

Your name is Kid-Kansas and you have a tornado shelter?

I think I'm having flashbacks. "Follow the yellow brick road, follow the yellow brick road...."

Thanks, I tried to find plans to do the raised garden but had no luck so I designed it myself. It is a 14 x 14 x 2 made with landscape timbers. The 7 rose bushes in the garden above it are Gold Medal Roses, They are a nice dark golden color and have a slight citrus smell to them. ;)

Wow, I'm impressed with the shelter.
