Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader? Review Summary

Watching Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader "makes you feel smart and ignorant at the same time." Comedian Jeff "Your Might Be a Redneck" Foxworthy hosts this game show on Fox that asks grade school curriculum of adults, to see how much we remember from all those years ago. The answer is, not that much, leaving a small selection of reviewers "appalled at the stupidity of the contestants" and finding the show boring. The adults' knowledge is compared to that of a group of 5th graders on the show that "are cute and, of course, very smart." The adults always have occupations or education to make you think they are very smart as well. Even reviewers that aren't fans of Foxworthy are fans of this show, as they "think he adds a little something different" to Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader, leaving the majority of reviewers not only knowing they are not smarter than a 5th grader, but also finding this to be a "fun family show." Fox also airs another popular game show, Don't Forget the Lyrics.

I realize that the trend among game shows seems to be to borrow hosts from the line of standup comedians looking for their next gig (Howie Mandel, Drew Carey, Bob Saget, etc.), but I still never would have considered Jeff "You Might Be a Redneck" Foxworthy for one of these roles. I can't even decide... review »

I finally watched this, afraid at first I would NOT be smarter than a fifth grader.  I found all the answers elementary as designed and was appalled at the stupidity of the contestants.  They actually only as about 6 questions, trying to fill the rest with "tension".  Definite thumbs down.

I'm generally not a fan of reality TV.  At least not the variety that depends on making its contestants look either stupid or extremely desperate.

Maybe its the fact that I have a 5th grader at home that finds me tuning into this show on occasion and actually enjoying it.

Sometimes of course we play along with it and I'm proud to say that I do pretty well.  But eventually like all contestants I ultimately have to utter the words "I am not smarter than a 5th grader"  Of course, its been a few years since I was in the 5th grade, slogging my way through snow each day to get to my little.  Wait! ...

I love comedy, but there is nothing funny about adults not being as smart as fifth graders. The kids are cute and of course, very smart. The adults, college educated, most in the top 10% of their class.Jeff Foxworthy is great as the host, making you wonder if your really correct after answering the $25,000 question. He  can really leave you hanging before a commercial.I usually don't watch reality televsion, but these games shows are great.I feel pretty good each night, being able to answer most questions correctly, but at the end of every show, I too have had to say "I am not smarter than a fifth... review »

I find Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader a very mind stimulating game.  I think the fifth graders are actually very smart and cute.  I really enjoyed the first season's kids.  Lots of personality!  I never was a fan of Jeff Foxworthy, but I think he adds a little something different to this game show.  I do have to say, though "I am not smarter than a fifth grader".

This is a genre that really promotes doubt of your own intelligence.   The questions are "to the point", the kids are  quick to answer--then Jeff plays with your mind.  A few "are you sure?" and you are really doubting your own ability.
It is very educational and provides a great refresher course for most of us.  It gives one a great sense of accomplishment to do well and a terrible crush of defeat when you miss an easy question.
You develop quite a lot of respect for the school system and wonder (a lot) if you were ever taught some of this stuff.
Over all, it's a good way to sharpen your...

I like to watch this show but I only watch it on my DVR. There are way too many long irritating pauses between question and answer.  I guess it's a plug for Mr Foxworthy's comedy (and I do love his comedy) but it is the most annoying trend among these shows. So I just fast forward through the pauses and commercials and watch the questions and answers.   I realize they do it for editing and time but please can't they just move on already??

I really enjoy watching this TV show.  I find it very intriguing to see what 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders are learning that most adults either don't know or have forgotten from their elementary school days.  There are always questions that i don't have a clue about the answer, but all the kids on the show answer correctly right away.  It really goes to show that if you don't use your knowledge, you lose it.  Very entertaining.

I like game shows and this is one of the better ones because of the kids and host.  True, some of the contestants are a bit "over the top", but it's fun to see if you know the answers to those questions.  I am not sure I believe that they are ALL questions from the grades shown, but it's been a long time since I've been in elementary school, so they could be.

I love watching Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader with my family, as i'm getting older my mind seems to forget what i learned in 5th grade, so on that note it is very stimulatin for the mind! I find it very entertaining, as well as a great learning experience for all ages. Jeff Foxworthy, as usual makes the show worth watching! I definitly give it a thumbs up!!

Ugh, this is one of the worst "game shows" I've ever attempted to sit through.  On 3 different occasions I've watched this and found it boring, unbelieveable, and not at all funny.  It takes forever to get to the answer.  Jeff Foxworthy really seems kinda washed up.

I have watched the show twice. Though not full episodes. The show is boring. Does not keep my attention. I have tried to watch it, but I end up flipping the station. Jeff Foxworthy's career is coming to an end if he has to stoop low enough to do a game show called " Are yu smarter then a Fifth Grader?"

Jeff Foxworthy is a comedian not a game show host.  I am really surprised the show is still on the air.  It is taken up good TV time slot, in which a more interesting show could be shown. Like Deal or No Deal.

Jeff needs to go back to being a comedian and give up being a game show host. This is game...

"Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader" is a family fun show, but if you are a single intelligent adult you might as well skip it and move on.  I enjoy watching it with my elementary age children to see who can answer the questions first.  I personally think that the questions are an insult to intelligent people in America.  I have no idea where they get the people on the show, but they miss the dumbest questions.  They are an insult to the American public.  I hope some of them are acting, especially the ones that have degrees!!  Some of the questions are challenging because it asks questions...
