This movie is a family friendly piece of mediocrity that looks and smells like a forgettable t.v. movie. I'm rating it two stars and still calling it a Kids Worst, because the family friendly genre deserves better.
Bright SPOT: John C. McGinley as a crazed contractor steals the movie. They should have built the movie around him.
Instead what we get is a loose remake of the excellent 1948 Cary Grant RKO comedy Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House.
Ice Cube has quickly made a sequel to the so-so Are We There Yet.
Nick Persons (Ice Cube) is married to Suzanne (Nia Long) and is stepfather to her two children. When Suzanne announces she is pregnant ("By who?" asks Nick. . .). So it's time to move out of the New York Apartment to a fixer upper in the suburbs.
Lots of slapstick stuff (like The Money Pit) happens. Nick gets burned, electrocuted and is attacked by a raccoon. The timing is off so everything seems forced. You might laugh, but you've seen this stuff many times before and usually done better.
John C. McGinley shows everyone what good timing, and good comedy instincts are. He deserves much better material and a much better movie than what Hank Nelken's script and Steve Carr's direction delivers.
Quite frankly I had more fun watching an episode of Extreme Makeover than this movie.
Ice Cube tried to reinvent himself from a rapper to an action hero a few years ago with the awful XXX sequel, and now he's trying to become another Sinbad .....He'll need far better material than this if he hopes to be Bill Cosby.
Come to think of it, Cos has made some godawful movies......
