Aquaphor Healing Ointment 1.75 oz —

We tried quite a few diaper rash creams but were not having much dramatic improvement with any of them. Finally, I decided to try some Aquaphor since I had used that on several of my cancer patients at the hospital. I found Aquaphor to be more effective than many of the diaper rash creams and ointments specially formulated for babies.

What I like about Aquaphor:

  • can protect and heal chapped, irritated, and (slightly) broken skin
  • works quickly (clinically proven to reduce diaper rash within 6 hours according to the website, and I found that to be true)
  • fairly easy to apply
  • does not burn when applied
  • less messy than zinc oxide (white stuff that is in products like Desitin)--I tended to use this under the baby's chin if she got chapped under there because it did not show but it's hard to keep chubby chins dry when the baby is drooling!
  • thick and stays where it is applied (resembles a thick Vaseline)
  • easy to find in most pharmacies and some other stores
  • tube fits easily into a diaper bag or pocketbook
  • does not tend to melt if left in a hot car

What I don't like about Aquaphor:

  • pricey--I found a store brand that tended to work just as well at a lower price
  • greasy feel--but I'd rather feel greasy than to be hurting and I'm sure the babies that I have cared for would agree
  • does not clear up all diaper rashes--contact your healthcare provider if a rash does not clear up quickly because it may need treatment for an infection like yeast
  • I found a couple of diaper rash products that tended to work better

My Viewpoint:

Aquaphor Healing Ointment is easy to apply and comes in a handy tube that is handy to store. With less mess than the white zinc oxide, Aquaphor may be particularly well suited to areas that might be seen by others. The price of Aquaphor is a bit high, and I found a comparable store brand that seemed to work just as well at a fraction of the cost.
