iTunes is like an internet Jukebox. You can play music, videos or podcasts. You can buy a movie, a song or an entire album. It has hundreds of streaming 'radio' stations in dozens of different genres. You can burn cd's or MP3 discs as well as DVD's with thousands of songs on it that you can use in your DVD player or even some car stereos
You can categorize you music into genre's, artists, albums or any combination. You can put most videos off of the internet into iTunes and they will be available for playing or loading onto your iPod. There are thousands of podcasts for download as well as videopodcasts. And you can also buy books on 'tape' from audible.com.
You can use 'smart albums' to categorize your music so that you can listen to all of your country songs that were made in the 90's by artists with the first name starting with r for example!
While playing your music you can turn on 'visualizer' and iTunes will sync your music to a light show that beats to the music. iTunes has an equalizer that is preprogrammed with dozens of different settings so that your music sounds as good as possible. You can display your music in list form, Album view or even the new 'cover flow' that is on the new iTouch and iPhones. There are features of iTunes that I have not covered that make this application the best music/video/podcast/videocast/audible players anywhere.
