Apple - iPod Video White (30 GB) Media Player —

Intro
Both of my children have had iPod Shuffles since Christmas 2005, and my husband a few weeks ago came up and asked me if he could get his own music on an iPod. This is a guy who listens to the same twelve songs over and over on a Mix CD I made him. Occasionally he'll listen to a country CD, some Beach Boys, or Stevie Ray Vaughan, but nine times out of ten, it's his mix CD.

Decision on Model
We looked up features of all the different iPods online, but my husband is the type to want to see things in person, so we drove to Best Buy to take a look. He kept laughing at the amount of songs they hold, 7,500? He listens to the same 12 songs over and over. Fate played a very important part in this decision, however. We turned on the iPod 30GB on display, and loaded on it was the movie Remember the Titans. This is his favorite movie or all time, and during football season when he's coaching, he watches it the night before a game. The decision was made right there.

Headphones

He wanted to have really nice headphones with it, so bought an expensive Bose pair, but for me, the headphones that come with all the iPods are more than sufficient. I grew up playing telephone with Dixie cups and a string. If it goes in my ear and sound comes out of it, it's fine with me.

Ease of Use
On this model of the iPod, and some others, they utilize a click wheel as the base control for everything, including play/pause, selection, volume, etc. When making a selection you click down on it, and when searching, you just glide along the outside of it. You wouldn't think all those functions could be possible with the wheel, but they are. The files are all organized categorically, so that you can find them by song, artist, or album.

When I "test drove" the iPod, I took it for a run with me. It was a little awkward to hold in my hand, but they do make apparatus to holster it here and there on your person, as well as in your car. It was somewhat chilly out that morning, so I  put my hands in my pocket with the iPod, but holding it tight like that, it was changing the volume every once in awhile on me. However, at least it fit in my pocket, where a CD player never would.

Summary
Those of us familiar with Apple products know that ease of use is nothing new. Movies and music aren't the only functions, as the iPod 30GB also stores photos, podcasts, games, and audiobooks. And for the price, this is a pretty good deal. $250 for either 7,500 songs or up to 40 hours of movies. On our way home with the iPod 30GB, we had to giggle with the comparison. In 1984, before I even met my husband, he bought a dual cassette boom box for the same price ... on credit. I'd buy one myself, but I'm holding out for the iPhone.
