I used to listen to a lot of music in college (in the '90s) on my portable CD player. What a long way we have come in 15 years! If you love listening to a lot of different music choices, this is a great product. I have an eclectic taste in music, and have over 3,000 songs on my computer. It is easy for me to shuffle them around using ipod's software, iTunes. I listen to music more often because of the ease in using this product and that has increased the quality of my life, truly. I listen to songs when I exercise. I practice meditation with guided relaxation techniques. I listen to audiobooks. I download my favorite radio shows via podcasts and listen to them on demand.
When choosing your ipod, I recommend purchasing one with a little more capacity than you think you will need. Your music library will grow and if your ipod capacity is small, you will have to do a lot of transferring music on/off your ipod. I used to have a 6 gb mini, which was a good size. When the nanos came out, I purchased the 4 gb, but if I had to do it all over again, I definitely would choose the 8 gb.
It does take a little practice learning how to use the iTunes software, but the effort is worth it. Make sure your computer fulfills the minimum system requirements before buying your ipod, to avoid the heartbreak of not being able to use it. My computer is pretty old and I have had no problems whatsoever. I also recommend checking your local library for an ipod how-to book. That is how I learned about most of the features. It was easier for me to go through the book than look through the help pages on the computer.
Of all the electronic toys in my home, my ipod is definitely my favorite. Okay, I admit it's a tie for first between the ipod and my tivo:)
