With old cell phones (mostly a line of RAZRS that continually broke), I would do nothing more than call and text and take the occasional picture, not that the quality was ever decent. Since I got the iPhone last August, it has completely changed how I use my mobile phone.
It is almost ridiculously useful. Besides my basic phone and texting needs, it takes great pictures, does not require me to buy another iPod to listen to my music, has a full browser plus YouTube, useful widgets like weather and notes, and the online iTunes store. Not to mention that it looks great. Customization and adding third party applications is easy enough, you just have to know how. Things like the auto-correct function are not a problem for me - as you can probably tell, I have a thing for typing out my words properly anyway, so it's mostly useful. The keyboard is also easy to get used to.
That is not to say that it is without flaws. AT&T/Cingular and my house's location are not in agreement and I cannot make a call from my house, or even with in a certain radius of my house (that being about two yards). The lack of a video camera is disappointing, not to mention basic features like copy and paste, and lack of Flash support. But besides the bad reception, my largest complaint is that you cannot save or delete texts individually. When you run out of room, you have no choice but to delete the entire conversation with the person, or stop receiving texts altogether. I feel like I've lost a lot of memories by having to delete texts that felt important to me (I carry on long conversations over texting).
The only other negative I have is that I do miss flip phones and their... flipping. I had an attachment.
But the iPhone is most definitely an amazing and INCREDIBLY useful phone, for pretty much anyone, and if it's within your price range, I most definitely recommend it.
