Apple MacBook
Three years ago I completed a doctorate degree in Education. My husband surprised me for my hours and hours and hours of work on my Dell laptop that was missing individual key covers and had a screen that always looked like it had a bad hangover with an Apple MacBook. I was delighted and yet cautious. I didn't even know if I would like an Apple MacBook. I had talked to people who loved theirs but I had no experience with one at all.
It is safe to say that I've had a Mac Attack and I'll never go back.
Let's go ahead and get one thing off the table that may make techno wizards cringe. This thing is cute! Whenever guests arrive at my house and peruse my alcove desk off the kitchen, it is not my great collection of classic books, the beautiful photographs of my children, my collection of elephants from around the world or even my priceless pottery pen holder that was handmade by my daughter that catches their attention. It is always the MacBook.
Repeatedly I hear: "Is that your computer?" "It's so (fill in the blank here with cute, sleek, attractive, pretty, adorable, neat, small."
While I agree with all of these, this isn't why I love my MacBook.
I love my MacBook because:
-Even though I am a child development specialist and not a computer specialist, I have been able to set up and use my computer without wasting time or calling India for assistance.
-It is so light weight that it is easy to pack up and go and carry or sit on my lap and as a busy Mom and family traveler I need all of those options.
-It also has 3 USB ports which I thought was overkill until I was putting together photo books on line downloading from three cameras.
-I love iphoto for uploads and photo storage and retrieval and the built in camera. It's fun to take snap shots of me and the kids at the computer but I have actually used it take photos to support articles published on the web as well.
-The battery life is over 4 hours. This is one of the biggest pluses for me. When I am traveling across country or even just out to my hammock on the porch, I know I can be unplugged for 4 hours.
There are features that I haven't tried out yet too. My daughter and I went to a presentation on "Birding Around the World" that had incredible photos, music and graphics and the presenters had made the whole show on an Apple MacBook just like mine. That's on my list of things to try.
It has web cam capability that I've played with but hey the whole point of working from home is that I can be in my pjs and my kids can style my hair and I can still turned out dignified work so don't expect any web mail from me.
As for browsers, Safari was there and I used it and was happy with it until there was a problem creating links at Associated Content. I learned that the problem disappeared with Mozilla.
Another thing to know if you are interested in hosting a web site, Mac compatibility can be an issue with basic and inexpensive web hosting packages. It's not impossible but the options can be more expensive and more complicated. So as with any computer, you really need to know every way you may want to use it.
Macs have a better reputation for being more protected against viruses and so far in my case that has held true.
My Viewpoint: I am really, really happy with my MacBook for both work and play. It was not a small investment but unlike my other laptops, after three years I have absolutely no thoughts about wanting to replace it, so over the long term in it was a good deal.
