Apple - 8GB iPod Nano Chromatics —

The Nano, All Grown Up

A few years ago I got my first iPod and my kids were extremely jealous, as they had Shuffles, which to them didn't seem nearly as cool as the new Nano I had gotten which had a screen and a few other options over their Shuffles. Then I got an iPhone, and I didn't think they were ever going to forgive me. For Christmas this year, I gave them each their own 4th Generation Nano, and I have to admit now I'm the one that's just a little jealous.

My iPhone still does more than the newer Nano, but still I have to admit it's pretty cool. I don't think they've left my kids' hands since they opened them on Christmas morning. My son had been looking for an XBox instead, but he hasn't seemed like he's been missing that too much. The Nanos have been their constant companions during this Christmas break.

While my old Nano was squarish in shape and seemed slim to me, it's practically bulky when compared to the 4th Generation Nano with its even slimmer shape that is sightly rounded. The rest of the features on the outside look exactly the same, as the Nano has gone back to this design after becoming a short, squat thing for the third generation. It comes in numerous different colors. I chose pink for my daughter and a charcoal gray for my son. Ordering them through apple.com, it allowed me to have them engraved for free as well. While there were many clever ideas for engraving available on the site, I went simple and just had their names engraved, thinking it would be nice should they get lost.

The interface I found updated and cleaner, even more so than my iPhone.  The uploading of songs is the same as on my older Nano, but now videos are included as well, just as they were on the 3rd generation Nano. It's the video function the kids are having the most fun with. While they have most of the same songs on the Nanos now that they used to have on their Shuffles, now they get to add videos as well. My son has added two movies and some movie trailers. My daughter has added movie trailers, some iCarly TV episodes, and some iCarly podcasts as well. What my son is also having a lot of fun with is the shuffle feature. You literally shake up the Nano and it shuffles the song. My daughter could care less about that option, though. Another newer option is the cover flow that is now on iTunes and most iPods.

Since both of my kids have been sick during Christmas (I'd ask for pity on them, but mothers out there will know that I'm the one that needs the pity), their iPods have really come in handy. They have come quite attached, but I have warmed them the new iPods stay home and don't go to school. We'll see how well that works out.
