The Verdict:  I'd be exhausted and a shredded mess without this thing.

Just the Facts:  A few days ago my cat became very ill.  I took her to the vet the next day and 2 hours and many tests later I was sent on my way with my kitty and three prescriptions.

My cat is small but when she's sick and needs to be medicated she somehow finds the strength of a wolverine and becomes a difficult patient.  If you've ever tried to get a cat to take a pill you know what I mean.

Thinking about trying to administer three pills per day for the next 10 days stressed me out. So I went to PetSmart to see if I could find something that would help and stumbled upon the Apothecary pill dispenser which looked like just the right gadget for the job.

The pill dispenser looks a lot like a syringe in that it's a long plastic tubular thing with a plunger.  It's easy to just poke the pills up into the bottom of the syringe, stick it in my cat's mouth, and push the plunger down to shoot it to the back of her throat and hopefully slide down where it needs to go.

We've used it three times so far and it seems to be working well.  Cats are not like dogs in that you can just cram the pill into some cheese or a glob of peanut butter.  It's more of an art form where one has to 1. track cat down; 2. assume the position of putting cat between one's knees and pulling their head back; and 3. manage to keep said cat from getting escaping while also somehow getting her mouth open and getting the pill into her mouth.  They almost always manage to tuck it in their cheek and spit it out immediately (or later) and the process needs to be repeated.  But with this nifty little device one can shoot the pill as far back as possible and clamp the cat's mouth shut without much trouble at all.

Closing Argument: For the first time in her life, I'm not exhausted from the fight my sick, 8-pound cat puts up when having to take pills.  This pill dispenser makes the process of getting pills into my cat quickly, within one or two tries, and without being bitten or scratched.  All this for only $6.  Yay.  5 stars and a great big Bugg hugg to the guy or gal who invented this thing.

I need this! I have 2 and a half cats (One comes and goes) and when I have to give them pills, they rip me to shreds. It actually may work for my 11 pound dog. He spits the pills out all the time. He is way too smart to gobble anything up without separating the pill from the good stuff first. I'll look for it!

I would have never thought they would have something to give a cat a pill. Neat idea. Scrappy always gets dried food and wet food is a treat...I mash up the pills with the back side of a spoon in a bowl and put them in a half a tea spoon of wet food. They get a treat and gobble up their meds. The vet gave me that idea when she was real little. (5 weeks old). Scrappy is my first cat and boy the things I have learned lol. I am a cat person now...OK, have to go fluff her pillow now lol

First you find the cat... lol

My vet showed me an easy way to give Fluffy his pills...I just grab him, squeeze at the back of his jaw, then pop the pill in quick when he opens wide. A little practice and it becomes second nature....

Thanks! Glad your kitty is on the back side of this process.
At first I was glad the vet gave us pills and not that awful pink antibiotic that tastes like bubble gum (what crazy cat wants to eat gum? eww). But now that I've had a few days of doing the pill thing I think the liquid would be easier. I mean, even if they drool half of it out they'll eventually hate having it on their fur and will lick it off. I'd almost rather give her a shot, but this dispenser gizmo is the next best thing. Eight more days of this. Ugh.

Giving a cat a pill is a chore. I've been there, done that. ;>

I had to LOL about how dispensing meds is an art form. I'm currently in the process of finishing up a course of antibiotic drops for my cat, and tracking her down is the first hurdle! I figured out a way to drop the meds in from the side of her mouth, so I no longer have to get her mouth wide open. I'm glad you found this device. I'm even more glad that the vet gave me drops instead of pills. Terrific review!
