I read through many reviews of the Antec Notebook Cooler on other websites and saw high reviews, and higher reviews overall than the Targus Chill Mat. I also figured out that any negative reviews were mostly about an older model, even though the picture on the box looked the same. The negative reviews mentioned features (on/off switch, lack of feet, etc.) not on this new model. This is important to figure out if you are reading bad reviews ... because it appears they have corrected those problems!

This cooler top is aluminum which has superior cooling properties versus plastic only. It is also made of plastic because that gives it strength. With the optional rubber feet Antec provides to lift the laptop higher, it gives even more air circulation and provides just the right amount of traction to keep the laptop from sliding off. Ever since I put them on, I haven't had any slippage.

The USB connector is a pass-through design, which means you can use two USB connectors in that same port by plugging into the back of the connector. Unfortunately, the cord comes out of it sideways and that may block another port on some laptop designs.

The USB cord is just long enough to plug into the USB in the back of my Dell Latitude D820 15" and reach across the bottom to the left of the cooler where it plugs into the cooler. It has a low/high fan switch (not an on/off switch), so as long as it is plugged in and the laptop is running, the cooler is running. There is also a blue LED light to let you know that you have it plugged in. It is so quiet on low, that without this light on, I wouldn't know it was plugged in and running!

The aluminum top of the cooler serves like a giant heat sink. The fan draws in air from the top and blows it out the right side and the back side. Even though my Dell laptop is drawing air in from the bottom and blows it out the left side, there is no conflict with air direction. (Some other reviewers came up with an incorrect notion of a vaccuum with the air sucking from the bottom of the laptop and from the top of the cooler. I doubt you'll be using it in outer space or a confined, air-tight space, so not a problem.)

I also bought the Targus Chill Pad (or mat?) and did not even bother to open the box and returned it. It could see that it was so much smaller, that I would have had trouble keeping the laptop situated on it. Plus it was in one of those hard plastic boxes that would have had to be cut, and I didn't want any trouble returning it. The Antec came in an easy to open cardboard box.

The Antec lists all the technical specifications on the outside of the box and you can find it on the net at whatever online store is selling it. Nowhere could I find technical specifications on the Targus, on the package or on the net, which is very disappointing for comparison purposes. Obviously Targus doesn't have anything to brag about and so left the info off the advertising. I also noticed it only had a one year warranty compared to the Antec's three year, despite the similarity in retail price. The Targus cooler was made entirely of plastic, no metal parts, and it did not mention whether its fans have ball-bearings, so doubt that it does.

I only paid $7.99 for it after Circuit City's sale and rebate, so I'm extremely pleased with the way it is cooling, as my laptop fan rarely goes on now, the laptop's intake and vents don't get blocked by my clothes or lap blanket, nor does my lap does not get hot from the pad.

great review. liked your point about the air being sucked from the bottom, as i was a little apprehensive to buy the antec one, after reading it. But anyway i bought it and it works great.
