I got one of those FREE ancestry.com memberships. I can't recall where that popped up. I didn't go to the site to get it. It was tacked on with some other online stuff I was checking out. I thought it sounded interesting, so I clicked the button. My bad.

I'm good at net research. That's one of my areas....

This is my favorite website to do my genealogy research. I have been doing research for about 5 years now, but I have been on a gazillion websites to try to do research. I am doing mine and my husband families and I have found a wealth of information on Ancestry. You can find out all the areas you ancestors moved to thru the years, if they could read or write, it even tells you were they were born and where their parents were born. on the census records and that is just one of the documents you can find on here. A couple of years ago, during a conversation with my mother, the topic turned to family heritage. Always curious about my ancestors, I peppered my mother with questions to see if I could uncover details about my family origins. She has a prodigious memory but her factual knowledge was limited. She remembered names, but not relationships; she remembered stories of family lore but didn't know how true they were. I have been doing genealogical research on and off for many years - maybe 15 or more. I have subscribed to various web research services. Somehow, Ancestry.com is one of the survivors, as many others have closed. For lack of revenue, I presume.

Ancestry.com has served me well. Its only real shortcoming has been my shortcomings. Unless you have a lot of time to devote to your search, you will run out of subscription before you complete your searches.

You also need to pay for the service after the trial period. We get used to getting free stuff on the web and we presume that is the way it is supposed... review »

Dear Lord this site is expensive! Monopoly on Genealogy!!!

I used the free 2 weeks to get started in genealogy. Didnt realize that after I attached files and the trial ran out that when I clicked on those files it would require me to pay to view them. BOO!

They do have the monopoly on genealogy sites and information. Noone else offers what they can. Therefore it's the only option so people go back to them.

I have been researching my heritage since 1993 and have used Ancestry for about as long. It is a place for a wealth of information. They are constantly adding new documents from around the world.

When they first started you could pick and choose your areas of interest. Now you only can choose between the U.S. or the World. Most of my time is spent on census records so I would like to be able to pay just for that.

If people could choose their areas of interest I believe more people would belong and be happier.

I've found that genealogy research is made easy by using Ancestry.com. Long lost relatives pop up in the most unexpected places sometimes. The amount of information found on Ancestry.com is extensive and a must have for researchers and curious people.

Great resource for finding out more about your own family history. I started researching my family's genealogy a year ago and have since traced my Father's ancestry back to the 15th century. Lots of information in a fairly easy to navigate site. Introduced me to family members my grandparents weren't even aware of.

Monthly subscription adds up, so I would recommend starting with the 6 month subscription and extending if you like the service.

Overall, if you're a researcher like me and like to uncover secrets and solve mysteries about the past, Ancestry.com can help you do it. Recommended.

Ancestry.com is a great online resource for anyone interested in researching their family history in the U.S. and a variety of other countries. Between census records, vital records, military records, old phone books, yearbooks and a myriad of other resources, everyone is bound to find something about their family. For serious genealogists, a subscription to Ancestry.com is practically a necessity. For the casual researcher who may not want to pay the subscription price, Ancestry.com can also be accessed free in many public libraries around the country.

I purchased the FTM 2006 suite and was pleasantly surprised by a one year trial usage of their ancestry.com website. Well, after trying for several days to get the search to work, I called their tech support. TS told me that as it was a free trial, they were not liable for any tech support. What good is a free triai if you can't get to use it? The program is great regardless, but if anyone has a subscription to ancestry.com, I wonder do you get this problem with TS as well?

I have been researching my family history for 32 years. I have found more leads on Ancestry.com in the last two years than I had in the previous thirty years. I visit the site several times a day! I didn't like the monthly subscription, so found a special year long subscription to the U.S. records for just over $100. I like the census images best, but also love connecting with others who are researching the same families.

Absolutely one of the best family finding resources on the WWW. I have found members that had long been forgotten about in my family lineage and would recommend the site to anyone curious of their family heritage. The only con I found is that for full benefits you must pay the membership fee, although that is miniscule when compared to many other sites that compete for the same business.

This site really improved when it offered all of the federal censuses. With the index added, it's even better. Other databases are good, but most are not relevant to my research. I wish they would get the state censuses online as they have been advertising for a while now. The war pension,draft, and enrollment records are also good.
